Digital powered monitors - PC playback
« on: May 17, 2005, 08:54:49 PM »
Any recommendations on powered monitors for PC?  24/96 w/coax

Trying to eliminate the receiver/bookshelf/sub setup.  Really only play sound from my PC for editing and the rare game.

My understanding is that spdif outputs do not send game sounds "accurately" and that if you play games at all, monitors with a built-in dac being fed by spdif might not be the best choice.  The analog swans on the linked page above look nice, I've been really happy with my cambridge soundworks satellite/subwoofer setup too.

If you're looking for a soundcard with nice sounding analog outs (and a bit-perfect optical spdif out), be sure to check out the Chaintech AV-710, which runs a whopping $25 from newegg.com and zipzoomfly.com.  It can be configured to send the analog out via a VERY nice sounding wolfson dac.

I have a m/audio 2496 installed.  Games aren't much of an interest...only very occassional (as in a couple of times a year).

I had been checking out the Edirol monitors, but that's why I posted...to see what was recommended.  Not going to be able to listen before buying, so...

Really just want to find as much of a full sound as possible without a sub...mainly for editing.
