How can I make my PCM-M10 sound as good as my MZ-M100?
« on: May 25, 2010, 03:51:13 PM »
I've used my Sony MZ-M100 for years and I love everything about it except for transferring files.  Usually I record my bands (2gtrs, bass, drums) in a 10x10 cinder block shed using a sony ECM-DS70P on low impiedence.  Recently I bought the PCM-M10 and I've tried what seems like every combination with the internal mics, the ECM-DS70P, and Church Audio Binaurals and the sound quality pales in comparison to the MZ-M100.  The bass response isn't there, it distorts way earlier than the minidisk and I'm just bummed!

Try line-in with a battery box.

Check the "mic sens" setting on the rear, at the side.  It should say "low".  There is also a "REC LEVEL" switch.  That should be on "MANUAL".

Plug in power on the Minidisc is very close to that of the M10.  That should not make much if any difference.

The ECM-DS70P is a mediocre mic at best and the Church omni is not recommended to be used with plug in power alone. The Church with a battery box into either line in or mic in (low sensitivity) should sound great.

I love Hi-MD too, but the M-10 has many advantages including not having to fool with Sonic Stage, so you should hang in there until you find out what is going wrong.
AT853's (all caps)/CM-300 Franken Naks (CP-1,2,3)/JBMod Nak 700's (CP-701,702) > Tascam DR-680
Or Sonic Studios DSM-6 > M10
