Thanks for the share.  My buddy (who just upgraded from old DVD batteries that were way past their prime) and I were talking about this exact situation.  I'm not comfortable with doing the soldering but know some people where I work who might be able to help out.

Read further down in the comments and in later 2018, people were stating the clearance is no longer there near the usb "port." Guess I'll need to open mine up to look.

I did this hack to one of mine but I put the connector out the side of the case. It was too tight a fit doing the way its shown

That's my comment at the bottom about the new PCB and what looks possible.  Haven't done it to mine, but looks pretty easy.
