Title: How to transfer dat>computer?
Post by: MakersMarc on April 09, 2016, 04:46:25 PM
So being borderline retarded as many of you know, I have no clue. How does the computer read the dat? What cable? I definitely don't expect a tutorial, just hoping someone can point me to a good one. I have a Fostex d5. Thanks!

Do you own any recorders with a digital input?

Or a computer with digital in?

I bought one of these and it works great.   for $30 or so.  I used to have a za2 digital soundcard but the  ISA slot was a limiting factor.   There are also people here running a dds computer "dat" drive  but that requires  a bunch of software / hardware.  the benefit to the computer based drives is better than real time playback.

Marc, you could record digi to your 661 and pull the files off the SD card and go from there.

Use this method.  Its basically cloning the DAT, like if you had patched at the show...

And it frees up your computer to do other things while you transfer a Tape...

Thanks Terry, that's the easiest, just need to grab a coax out dat deck. Gonna concentrate on my masters, at least the non sketchy stuff ( not sure anyone needs Mickey Harts Mystery Box

I so miss my ZA2. True hardware re-sampling.

If your Fostex is optical only, you can use this to convert to coax out.

Worked perfectly when I had to transfer a couple of Minidiscs from a optical-out only deck to a coax-only in audio card.

If all you need is a Coax > TOSLINK convertor (Digital Format Convertor), I have a Hosa ODL-276 you can borrow...  Just pay the shipping and return it when you are done...  I use it in my Minidisc Transfer rig, so it doesnt get used that often, but at the same time, I don't want t get rid of it...

Let me know!

That D5 has an AES output. I use an xlr to rca digi cable to go from D5 to pmd661 and it works great.

I might ahve an AES>SPDIF cable too, but I'll have to check...

aw :( I like the mystery box shows. really into the drums / space segments on GD shows lately though, which may explain it
