Suggest AT853 config for this location..
« on: July 18, 2013, 04:56:30 PM »
I've been reading through the forum and in the process of learning the different mic configurations, as I didn't want to take the lazy way out and just post the question without being somewhat educated!
Well, here the n00b is posting anyway... Have to start somewhere.. right!?

In some configurations, it appears that it may be personal preference?

A couple questions:
- A-B a preferred choice - with the mics to be used and the location in the attached pic?
- DIN config best to only be used from a center location?

I have a 13' stand, AT853, KM235/1 Stereo Bar, AT8438 mounts and whatever else i will need - based upon your input.

This pic is an accurate location as to of where i will be open taping from - reserved seating second row.

TIA

Edit 2013-08-26: attached pic of accurate location

I would get them as far left as you can.  I wouldn't worry about any kind of spread.  Take the recording home put in computer....use your favorite editing program, bounce both tracks to mono then split back to stereo again then add a slight amount of delay to one channel to recreate the stereo filed.  sit back enjoy burn to disc......

So, you're saying i'm in a prime location!?  ;)

Just A-B with no particular spacing.. pointing towards the left stack (not sure what you were meaning by getting them as far left as possible)

I appreciate your input!

How big is the pit?
Are you at far to the outside?

I wouldn't be afraid to ask someone on the inside isle a few rows back if they want to trade
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

Hey Will!

In this attached image, I colored the pit area green - not sure of the length / distance. I don't know my seat location yet - just that it's second row (red on the pic).
I have 4 seats together and will probably let the stand occupy one seat.. But yes, I will try to trade if need be closer to the inside.

Thanks for any input.

So, you're saying i'm in a prime location!?  ;)

I wouldn't say prime.  Prime would be the same row dead center between the PA.  You appear to be far right of center, just right of the Right side PA.  When I said get as far left as you can I am talking about moving as far to the center as you can.....  You are however very close to the PA and depending on the dispersion pattern of the PA the sheer volume of the PA may override the need to be more center.  You should be able to make a decent recording from that location.

I was once in the same type of situation for Bruce Hornsby in a theater.  I was far right on the end of a row about 4 rows back from the PA.  The sheer volume made for a crisp recording, the sense of space just wasn't there becuase of being close to the wall.  Being outdoors will certainly change that for you.

Just to clarify.. I understand the wanting to position as close to center as possible, pending others willingness to trade.. That makes sense.
Either way, if I'm within that vicinity shown in the attached picture..  Go with A-B - pointing at the right stack?

I appreciate your help. Thanks

Here's a more accurate representation of location that I plan to be taping from, stage right red line.. With that being said, will A-B still be the choice configuration?

i would go din pointed with at an angle so that each mic is aimed toward a stack
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
