I've been running mine strictly on an external 9v lithium DVD battery, with no internal batteries.  Have had no problems at all what so ever...  and get somewhere near 5hours with phantom power on and backlight continuously on.  But I do always carry an extra battery with me just in case.
.....got a blank space where my mind should be.....

Those Tekkeon myPower ALL batteries are expensive. Which model do you recommend?

I use the MP3300 with my HD-P2 along with Duracell 1.2V/2650mAh rechargeables and have never had any problems.

I thought the power indicator in the lower left indicates what power source is being used, but now I think it can indicate plugged in external power while actually running on the internal AA's.

I think it just indicates an external power source is presently plugged in, not what source it's drawing it's power from.

Yep, that's my conclusion too.

when i use a 12v with the 8 internals, the powere indicator does change when the external runs out... i think it not changing might have something to do with the low voltage battery you are using, 'cos it always changes for me... and the plug in light is not on when running off internals, the battery icon shows then...

What plug tip are you using on the HD-P2 side (B?) as it seems a few of them fit?
AKG SE300b (CK91/CK93) or SP-LSD2 > Busman Transparency mod Tascam HD-P2

I couldn't get the unit to power on with any of the ones that came with the unit.  I use the "M" tip, which my Radio Shack had for about $6.
