this one (CSPA-1C) belongs to tad black here in atlanta. i'm switching out the ssm2017 chips for the burr-brown ina217 chips and building him a +18/-18v external power supply.

according to tad, this baby sounds really nice!

Just got this Cooper Pre on loan. Need a little help building a power cable & suggestions on what to power it with? At one point leegeddy was going to do this.

Also do you think changing the chips out will make a big difference? It was never done as well. I'd like to run it stock for a bit first.

He was going to build a +18/-18v external power supply? But it looks like it will run off 12v to 18v.

Hoping I really like this pre. I need an external power supply though. From what i understand it runs for 3 hours on 4 9v's.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Not to say this won't sound nice stock, but I'd replace the SSM2017 preamp chips.  They are used in the G-P DMic20, the Aeta PSP3, and the Beyer MV100, among other preamps.  I find them to sound a bit grating in the highs.

Burr-Brown (Texas Instruments) makes a drop in replacement -- the INA217.  The INA217 is basically a re-packaged INA163, the same instrumentation amp used in the Lunatec V3.  That would be a very easy mod to do, and would almost surely improve the sound.

THAT corporation also makes a drop in replacement for the SSM2017, the THAT1510.  I'd go with the TI/Burr-Brown INA217 though.  From the looks of it, those SSM2017's are in a DIP socket, so changing them out would be a snap.  Just pull them out and push in the replacement INA217's.  If you don't like the sound, revert back to the stock unit.

BTW, you should be able to get sample parts of the INA217 from the TI.com website for free.

PS.  Nice score on this preamp!!

Can anyone confirm this for me. Which INA217 chips do I need to order? here's the link to ti.com

http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/ina217.html

I'm guessing I need the 5th one down? Device INA217AIP?

Had a chance to run this last night. Think I'm really going to like it. Have to figure out a external power source. It eats up the 9v's.

Thanks
Jeff

Yep, those are the ones you want.

BTW, you can get a special chip puller (assuming those SSM2017s are in DIP sockets), which looks something like a modified pair of tweezers.  These DIP pullers make it easy to pull the chips out of the sockets (and not mangle them, so you can use them again).  Not sure where you'd get them, but it might be worth getting.

Good luck!

Thanks again Todd. The force is strong with Todd. He read my mind on the dip pullers.  ;D

Called a friend who works at a local high end audio shop (Cohens)

He builds cables & such he's the tech guy. They just so happen to have the INA217 chips on hand. So for a Arby's french dip & curly fries I got the chips changed out.

Pretty happy right now.  ;D
