edit - the link above seems to be about $250 less than other retailers.

Portable, battery powered analog to digital converter for converting microphone or line level analog audio into a digital audio stream

2 high-quality transformer based microphone preamps and outputs a single, variable level AES/EBU digital signal

Phantom power is available for use with condenser microphones

The output sample rate is selectable by the user and a word clock input is provided for synchronization with other AES/EBU equipment

Dual function meters display either digital output or analog input levels

    Headphone output with level control

Operates from 4 AA batteries or the included wall power supply (or on 6v DC)

I looked at one of those before buying the USBPre-2.  Two downsides for me were the size and the fact is is only AES output.  Other than that I came very close to purchasing one, but finally opted for the SD unit instead.

FWIW, AES out isn't such a big deal. Most equipment with a spdif coax in will accept a signal sent over an xlr> coax cable. Or one can use a barrel plug adaptor. I hear you about the size, though.
