Konnekt 8 In the Field
« on: April 20, 2007, 12:28:26 PM »
Following up on this thread: http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,78503.msg1044849.html#msg1044849

Wednesday, I took the konnekt8 out to play @ The State Theater in Falls Curch, VA for Zero.

Now, I have had some trouble getting a dc power solution working (see here)
but, thanks to tapernateva, I had access to ac power for the show.

I ran the following setup:

Superlux SMK-H8K/H (hypers X-Y ~7ft @ the SBD right of center) > TC Electronic Konnekt8 > Hosa ODL > JB3 @ 16/44.1kHz

Worked without a hitch. Seriously.

Here's a sample: http://www.sendspace.com/file/5ajtrk (65mb flac of Tangled Hangers from Set One)
Here's a smaller sample: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ju3d2i (8mb flac of the end of Tangled Hangars)

The only real complaint that I have is this: the three-LEDs indicating signal, -10db, O/L (clip) are insufficient. I did get some soft clipping where it went red (nothing audible in my spot checking) but, naturally with better metering I would have ridden a little hotter.

If I were using a recorder with better metering, this wouldn't be an issue, though.

Thought I'd followup this thread and use it to share my attempts to get this thing running on a battery.

As you can see from the thread linked here: http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,83061.0.html (also linked in the previous message) This puppy has resisted a rudimentary attempt to roll with an sla.

I have since corresponded with TC Electronic about this:

I would like to use my konnekt 8 in environments where AC power is unavailable and my laptop can not provide FireWire bus power. If I were to  seek to build/purchase a battery system for the Konnekt 8, what power specifications should I be aware of?

Dear Jonathan,
If you are to power the Konnekt by other than a wallwart, you will need to provide the exat amount and type of current described on the power supply.
We do however not support this, and should you decide to do this, it will void warranty.
I would suggest that you get a PCMCIA based firewire adapter, then use an adaptor for the firewire controller card in order for it to provide bus power. That would be the best and safest way to do this.

I have replied with the question of powering this via firewire but with no computer attached.
Items such as this:

Props to TCE support, they got back to me fast, this morning.

Dear Jonathan,
Though I haven't tried any devices like that, as long as it supplies sufficient bus power that should work just fine. Whether it receives power via power supply or firewire bus makes no difference.

Looks like I'm going to work that route.

Rowjimmy, how did the Konnekt 8 respond to the 12V firewire powering?

Did anyone else try to power this externally? Any luck?

No luck whatsoever with the firepod.

I then resorted to standard dc powering methods and I actually think I ended up shorting it with reversed polarity...

oops.
