Wow!  That looks great.

I use this all the time on the NJB3.  Nice to know that Edirol has it now...

Am I reading the PDF right... They have added a manual file split option... Pressing the A-B REPEAT button will manually split the recording... but it will not be a seamless split... correct?

Still could be useful at times... guess if you want seamless split, just let it roll.

-------------------------------------------------------------
The following parameters have been newly added to the [Menu Screen].

Category - Recorder Setup
Menu/Effect - File Split Pressing the [A-B REPEAT button] during recording splits the file at the location at which the button was pressed.
Value (Default value in bold) - OFF (file will not be split) ON (file will be split)

• Depending on the specifications of the card, there may be rare cases in which the recording is interrupted.
• The recording will not be interrupted, but it will not be possible to play back the preceding and following files without interruption (i.e., gapless playback is not possible).
• It is not possible to split a file in a way that would cause any portion to contain less than two seconds of material. File splitting is possible only when each resulting file will contain at least two seconds worth of recording.
• If you split a file manually while recording via the internal mics, the sound of the operation (the click of the button) may be recorded. If you want to avoid this, please use an external mic.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Then: Nakamichi CM300/CP-1/2/4 + Soundboard -> Audio-Technica AT4462 -> Sony TC-D5M
Now: Avantone CK-40 + Avantone CK-1 (Busman MOD) -> BusR4 (T+NF Mods)
Backup/Stealth: Sennheiser MKE > CA-9100 > Tascam DR2D

WOW!!!  Kudos to Greg for SPOOKELY PROMPT NEWS!! (just released today!) of having full 8 GIG faultless file spanning.

This is the FIX of most value as I've had an 8 GIG Transcend card in there for a long time remembering to step over that missing (first 2 GIG spanning ability) stone.

The other improvements expand the useful features of the deck, and are 'icing on the cake' to me.

However, here we go again!   While the 8 GIG card spanning is claimed fixed, this is a new version, requiring user experiences to know if any bugs crept in with the spanning fix and new features.

At present experience of many hours of R-09 use, good confidence exists with v1.20 stability with little or no (unexpected) deck errors.

So again, we need to try DIFFERENT MAKES OF CARDS, to know if this firmware version is fully stable, and  (2) just what cards work well with latest firmware.

Please post your experiences with 1.30 installed including flash card details.  Maybe v1.30 is all gain with no pain, I'd like to think Roland took plenty of time for quality testing.

So for now, the jury (us tapers) is out until we report what is so with v1.30

I'll be posting here and the (continually updated) website R-09 review: www.sonicstudios.com/r-09revw.htm
"mics? I no got no mics!  Besides, I no have to show you no stink'n mics!" stxxlth taper's disclaimer

Good point on keeping eyes out for other bugs that may have been introduced.

I need to get my hands on a Class 6 8gb card now... I would suggest that everyone go with a class 6 card and not bother with the class 2 cards, as I believe the newer class has better SD Standards from the SD people.

Not the most scientific test but created a repeating sine wave to record.  Then joined the sections and zoomed in as much as possible to see if there was a break in the wave form.

Recorded to an 8gig class 2 Transcend card that I bought when firmware 1.20 came out thinking it would work.

Manual split seems to show a seamless split.

Autosplit seems to work flawlessly.  At 24X48 I got 3 2 gig files plus another partial when the battery died at around 6 hours 15 min.

So far I love the autosplit and the manual split is an extra bonus.

Also... I went to the download site at Roland for the firmware.  They now have a doc that is a practical guide to using the R-09.  Nothing earth shattering but the guide did not come with my unit.

It's sad that manual file splitting is only implemented during recording, not playback. For those of us journalists using the R-09, extracting a sound bite still requires the use of a computer.

Anybody format their 8gb card yet?  The key for this upgrade, IMO.  The splitting stuff is just gravy.

I formatted on the R-09 before doing the manual split and then again before the auto split test above.  Took about 5 seconds and had no issues.

Just to check stability before I take it out for the first time since the upgrade ive just been letting it record the tv/stereo and do autosplits until the rechargables run out.  I've gone through 3 cycles with no issues on the old class 2 transcend 8 gig card.  Also, did a test on a newer 4 gig Transcend card that I was using for my camera.  So far everything seems OK.

Is there something in this firmware update to improve battery usage, or gaugeing or something?

Last night, I decided to see if I could run the R9 on 2 2,700mAh PowerEx AA's, and totally fill up my 8GB card.

24/48, display set to lowest brightness, monitoring on, plug-in power off/just using internal mics, etc.

I woke up this morning to a full card, and lots of battery life left.  I moved the new files from the card, which meant the R9
was running for an additional 30 minutes. Then, I started recording again.  I got about another 2.5 hours, or 2.5GB
before it shut off!

So, 10.5 hours on 2 rechargeable AA's. That has to be a record!

I'mgoing to try this again, as I can't believe it myself.
I could eliminate the 30 minutes spent transfering files off the R9 by using a card reader, and perhaps make 11 hours recording at 24/48.

I bought 4 of those same 2700 batteries, and have had nothing but GREAT luck with them in my R09.

Before that I was on a rotation of 8 Energizer 2600 batteries, and those were basically not keeping a charge after about 14 months of moderate use.  But with the 2700's, no matter what I have run them for, they always show as full and complete charges  :o ;D

PS- I used the SD slot built into my laptop to transfer, so i cant speak to that side of things

My 2700s are Sanyos.  I find that with display at the brightest, no power saving modes on, and external pre and mics I can get about 9.5 hours of recording.  The only thing that sort of sucks about the R-09 is my battery meter will show full until the battery is almost dead then will go instantly to the lowest setting before the X about to run out part of the meter.  Once it drops I get about another 20 min.

Your charger probably does it.  If you have not already you may want to try to recondition those old energizer batteries.  I don't know if this is the best practice but I recondition my Sanyos every 25 charges or so.

On the transfer, all computers are different.  Make sure if you are plugging into a hub it is 2.0.  Also, if you are running windows you may want to check windows update for a usb2 compatibility patch.  If you need me to I can probably find the patch number.  I was having slow transfer speeds (R-4 and R-09 along the lines of what you mentioned) but after windows update installed the patch I can do 8 gig in about 12min.  If I boot into Ubuntu it clocks at about the same 12 min.

I have this fancy charger which shows me available mha remaining in the batteries after a series of deep charger/drain cycles (you can set the number of cycles) and these are definitely pretty darn used up.  I have some really old 1800s that have more life left than these 2600s (scary, huh).  The idea behind this charger is to better match batters when putting them into service and to better manage the life of the batteries, but the charger was not cheap.

IMHO, worth the extra cost for the better info on the batteries: http://www.mahaenergy.com/store/viewitem.asp?idproduct=423

I have had the same 20 minute issue with the meter.  Once the levels on the R09 are showing low, it is pretty much too late and time to change the batteries out quickly (that has been with any batteries in the until of any mah).

I like the look of that charger.  Mine is the same brand ($40 less) but requires you to charge the batteries in pairs.  Thats not that bad if you don't get the batteries between pairs mixed up as the amount they can hold should stay pretty consistent.  But of course I don't really seem to be able not to mix them up so it's all out the window.  Do you know if they have a version that also does C and Ds?

I don't know if it means anything but a search on the model number returned a unit that looked the same in the picture from MAHA but had to be recalled because of a few issues recharging hi capacity batteries.  I did not see anything in the reviews I found for the Powerex talking about a recall.

EDIT:
The battery meter issue only seems to happen with the rechargeable batteries.  If I use alkalines and select the correct setting in the menu it tracks the battery usage correctly.

I have not had any issues with the charger.  I have a few older batteries that it wont charge, as the initial test shows the voltage is off.  And these wont charge in any charger I have.

I have 4 2300mah PowerEx batteries that it wont charge for the same reason... but these 4 will charge in the generic chargers.

Any batteries I dont trust go into the baby's toys.... or any lower mah ones.

I look at it this way, the cost of this charger is worth it to make sure my gear wont die in the field because of power

PS- they are nice toys for us geeks too  ;D

slightly on topic, please help

i use the 4gb sdhc card with the 1.20 firware and when i begin to record in 48/24 mode with the edirol r-09, it give me a time of somethng like 3 hours and change--( close to four hours) and as i record i see the time record and the file fill up, when does it make the auto change to a new folder--at what time, i know its 2gb, but out of a 4gb card it seems like say wav.00001 r09 fills up some where under 2hrs.   so if a concert goes over the 2 hr mark and i am recording and the encores start and a new file starts is anything going to be missing or any blips happen?

1. i guess i wnat to know how much overll recording tiem do i have with a 4 gb sdhc card running at 24/48?

2. when does the auto split happen-at what time?

3. if it goes to a new folder while a song is being recorded does it interrupt the recording at all?

its late--sorry for the bad repetitive diction

please advise

Hey now
1) If I remember correctly 24/48 = ~1 gig per hour
2) Auto split time is set within the setup menus of the R-09. I think under recording options (max file size, then turn auto split on)
3) A new file will be started.  From what I can tell with 1.30 the split is seamless. You won't get a new directory but will get multiple files.
4) yes it's late... hope the response makes sense. I'm off to bed.

Hmm, I'm running XP Home SP2, and Windows Update usually grabs things automatically as they come out. I know my ports are 2.0.
But, I'll try it if you have the patch, or can find out it's number.
thanks.

What's the consensus on 8 gig cards?
Who's tried them?
Any issues?

I lost a show I was taping last night.  I was st****ing.  When I last looked, the R09 was recording.  I checked it one more time before I put it away and it was still running about 21 seconds in...........

At the end of the night when I went to hit stop, nothing was there.   ???  When I turned off the Hold, the R09 said it had a SD card error.  I watched it

I did a data recovery scan and found my file on the R09, but it shows up as a deleted file and size of only 8.   ???  Am I screwed?

I can't answer if file might be recoverable, but seems good chance file errors with more recent runs of Transcend 8 GIG cards is still unresolved even with new 1.30 firmware.

Dan - that sounds goofy to me, to say the least.

The other night I hit pause an extra time and only noticed with less than a song left in the performance (a 20 minute opener)... I was ratehr bummed that I ran on pause.

So, when you checked the deck, it was off and nothing on the screen?
When you looked at the card in the PC, it showed no files at all?
Even the file restore showed nothing to restore?

For what it's worth I have been using a 16Gb A-data brand CF card in my 722 with out any issues.

Edit to add:

Just found this omne as well, I geuss prices are really coming down.

Falling prices has produced quite a shakeout with companies producing these products, but from what I've read, prices should be stabilizing soon so some makers expect to stay viable for the long run.

Here is a .PDF about SDHC specifications originally posted on Kingston's site: www.sonicstudios.com/sdhctopc.pdf

Here is the total 8 GIG SDHC newegg page offerings: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000070068+1053125651+1053313634&name=8GB

So far, newer made Transcend 8 GIG seem still have file error problems even with v1.30 in the R-09, so maybe best to avoid at least this brand until more users report otherwise.  Since there are now MORE makers of SDHC types, some of us are going to be guniea pigs for trying these to see if current production of these models work as expected with R-09 deck.

Great price for a big card, but I'd hate to be the guinea pig to try it out. I don't have any other devices that I could use it in. rWc3523 8)

While SDHC Type 2 speed rating should be plenty fast for R-09 audio, the higher speed cards might be useful for the newer flash card video camcorders, especially the HD versions moving a lot more data in shorter time than standard definition video models.

Interesting to see no Sandisk Ultra II brand model 8 GIG SDHC at Newegg, but drilling into Sandisk's site gives the reason: HIGH COST

See product page http://www.sandisk.com/Products/ProductInfo.aspx?ID=2339

However, Sandisk Extreme III 8 GIG SDHC card seems the bargain in comparison with screaming 20 mb continuous data rate, and lower cost than slower Ultra II : http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Item(2525)-SDSDRX3-8192-901-SanDisk_Extreme_III_SDHC_8GB_Card_with_MicroMate_Reader.aspx

BOTH come with dedicated (much needed) SDHC card reader so expected read/write performance is maintained with at least computer connected applications

When I check via file recovery, its shows that 3rd file is still there, but as a deleted file.  8mb is the size.  Not sure if that's the entire show, crumpled up, or how much was actually recorded.  If I send you the card, do you want take a shot at recovering the file?

Not that it's that big a deal, but it would be nice if they make another firmware revision which includes the ability to play files w/ tags on them.  I tried to play an mp3 w/ a tag and the r-09 wouldn't play it until I deleted the tag.  Seems like it would be easy to make it so it at least ignores the tag and just plays the song, but maybe it's harder than it seems w/ its current file structure.

When I loaded v1.20 I got a file repair utility that came in handy repairing a file. For instance, when the R-09 stopped in mid recording when AC power failed, the file showed up unplayable with an error, but worked fine after running the R-09's file repair on it.

But after loading v1.30, I no longer see that file repair utility in the R-09's menu structure! Are others missing it too?

Well, I'm running v. 1.20 and I cannot find the repair function on my menu. Now I DID find the repair function when I had a damaged file (batteries died during recording) and it seems like it's not there now. Maybe it's only visible when there's a bad file on the card? Either that or I'm looking in the wrong place. rWc3523 :headphones:

Yep, they used to work fine, but somewhere along the line this year Transcend made a small change in a controller IC choice that now affects at least the ability to keep working OK in the R-09 deck, so for now, maybe best avoid this make for R-09 use until something changes back for the better.

When considering whether a card is fast enough for your audio, you can do a simple test - just put it into an SDHC card reader, and fill it with files from your PC (ideally large ones).  How long does it take to fill?  Not very long.  What length of audio would you expect to record onto it in real time?  A lot more than the time it takes to fill.  Speed should not be an issue unless your recording hardware can write several 24/96 stereo files at once.

While this seems a good way to see if a flash card is fully functioning at least with whatever card reader you have, working as expected while recording audio inside a particular deck is a different matter of speed and protocol timing for error-free data handling with that model deck

So suggest using the card, after formatting inside the deck, for doing actual test recordings at highest rate and most likely modes (mp3/wav) expected.

Any updates on 8gb card compatibility?

I have just taken the taping plunge and bought an R09 which I intend to upgrade with 1.30. I was going to get an 8gb card (though a 4gb would probably do - if it is 1gb/min) but read through this thread and am unsure what to do for the best.

I can get a Sandisk Ultra II for £50 - would this make more sense than buying one of the many other brands?

Thanks.

I have a Sandisk Ultra II 4gb SDHC card and it works great in my R-09. I can get about six hours at 16-bit and four hours at 24 bit. Uploading to my HD is usually pretty quick. I'd like an 8gb but I want to make sure I get one that's compatible. rWc3523 :headphones:

SO, I consider myself above average computer literate etc...I followed the update instructions exactly as they are written for the 1.30 firmware update and it just doesn't work!  My r-09 has 1.20 installed out of the box...I've tried it both ways...USB2 and SD directly into a slot on the PC and I have no direct access to the "root directory" and the r-09 doesn't look for it and install from the SD.  YEs- I am using the original formated 64meg card that came with the unit. I'm running a Sony Vaio Windows XP.   Any help would appreciated...many thanks in advance!  pm me here or email at dgs711@comcast.net

Sorry to hear that, I am on a mac and i was able to put on the 1.30 firmware.  It sounds like you are doing all the  right things.  I htink the 1.30 comes zipped, so after download you unzip? then dmz file needs to go on the edirol icon.  China_rider has done it and so has josephine they could help with the PC thing.

I just bought an r-09 from the YS and was wondering how do I know which firmware is currently installed on the unit?

When you first turn it on, look at the bottom left corner of the display screen.  There you will see Ver. 1.xx  That will be your firmware version.

Just saw this on Edirol's site, here is the readme and the link to the download:

PC: http://www.roland.com/products/en/_support/goFtp.cfm?sRcId=0000020382&sDlId=0000048689
MAC: http://www.roland.com/products/en/_support/goFtp.cfm?sRcId=0000020382&sDlId=0000048712

Looks like better support for 8gb SDHC cards, that is all thats shown in the PDF: http://www.roland.com/products/en/_support/goFtp.cfm?sRcId=0000020382&sDlId=0000048737

Greg

SO, I consider myself above average computer literate etc...I followed the update instructions exactly as they are written for the 1.30 firmware update and it just doesn't work!  My r-09 has 1.20 installed out of the box...I've tried it both ways...USB2 and SD directly into a slot on the PC and I have no direct access to the "root directory" and the r-09 doesn't look for it and install from the SD.  YEs- I am using the original formated 64meg card that came with the unit. I'm running a Sony Vaio Windows XP.   Any help would appreciated...many thanks in advance!  Jerseyboy

I unzipped...You lost me on the dmz file and edirol icon part...When I connect my R-09 via usb2 it shows up as a removable disk drive "N"...my only option is to drag n drop or copy & paste the update file.  I Think Josephine contacted me way back for advice for updating to 1.20! I thought I helped LOL!!!!  CHinarider or Josephine HELP!!!! Jerseyboy

when you unzip, you should be able to click on the unzipped file? yes? then in there you should see a DMZ file extension.   YOu just have to take that file and drag it or how you would put it to your drive " n".  First, you might after connecting your Edirol wiht the usb to the PC you might want to click on your DRive " n" and take the DMZ file off your edirol which will be your 1.20 vesion, then do the above...unzipping the file...click the unzipped file find the DMZ extension and put that on your edirol r-09/ removable disk drive " N", then once done you need to disconnect edirol properly from your PC then as you start up the edirol for the first time hold down the " rec" button until the screen appears

MANY THANKS!  For this step by step - and might I add simple instructions!  I'm almost afraid to ask about the final piece to the process...but where did you learn about the holding down the record button upon powering up the r-09? I don't see this step anywhere.   You've all been a great help. Have a wonderful Holiday season - may Santa  fill yer stockings with AA 2700 rechargables.

I am glad it worked. where I learned the hold the " record" button to set the new firmware was actually in the original PDF file that came with the first update that edirol put out. Its in the instructions after I think were it states about disconnecting from the PC-- after putting on the new firware--then there is something about holding down the " record" button to set the new firmware.  I really just posted from memory I am very glad that you got it to work.  AGain, i wrote those instructions from memory and  i am glad they proved to be understandable and reliable.

as far as SDHC card compatibility goes, this is the link posted on the Edirol site regarding it. I just bought a 8Gb Class 6 Transcend card to use with the 1.30 upgrade, hopefully it works. This list says it does. I had tried the Transcend 4 Gb/Class 2 cards previously without checking this list first and they didn't work.

FWIW (been meaning to post this), I have a Kingston 8gb SDHC Class 4 card working just fine.

The model number is "SD4/8GB" and I paid about $40 after rebate.

So I did a test yesterday and today with the 1.30 firmware for the R-09. I used a new Transcend 8Gb/Class 6 card with the R-09 settings at 24/48 and a 2Gb file split. Once formatted the card capacity reads 7.5Gb's. Yesterday I tried the internal mic's with no problems, today I used my AT853 card's > Aerco MP-2> R-09 setup with no problems. I got a recording time of 02:04:12 for each file before it split at the 2Gb boundary. The Transcend 8Gb/Class 6 card worked error free so there should be no speed issues with these SDHC cards unless it becomes a card by card problem like the previous issues regarding the Transcend 4Gb/Class 2 cards. I bought the Transcend 8Gb/Class 6 card from newegg.com for just under $45. Hope this helps some of you.

edit: $34.99 after $10.00 rebate is now being offered

How did you notice a gap at the split?  I have recorded many many shows on 4gb cards with no gaps and 1 or 2 on an 8gb card with no gaps.

I was wondering the same thing.
I've recorded many, many shows that resulted in an auto split at the 2 gig mark . . . all of which joined together seamlessly.

ditto, i thought it was seemless regardless if you have the file split set to ON or not.

Ok, so I went back and pasted the files together and there is no loss. It was just during playback of individual tracks that I got the hiccup. Sorry for the confusion everyone.  :-[
I modified my original post so it won't confuse anyone else. +T everyone for catching this and filling me in.  :)

As with any "drive" the OS and FAT tables take up space, so you will never get 100% of the GB's to use

i thought we would get the same number due to the fact we are using the same "type" of card the 8gb class 6 sdhc?

Maybe the Transcend has some different code that's a little bigger than the Kingston's? I just ordered a couple of Kingston's of the same size/class from B&H photo because they had a rebate on them. I'll compare the two once I get them.

Here's the Transcend specs/features:

Features:
Please check SDHC compatibility chart before you purchase
 Class 6 specification
 Original NAND Flash Chips
Supports Error Correcting Code (ECC) to detect and correct errors
 Mechanical Write Protection Switch
 Lifetime Warranty

Specification:
 Size: 32mm x 24mm x 2.1mm (L x W x H)
 Op. Voltage: 2.7V~3.6V
 Op. Temperature: -25C (-13F) to 85C (185F)
 Durability: 10,000 insertion/removal cycles
 Weight: 2g
 Transfer Speed(4GB): Approx. 19MB/sec Read; 7MB/sec Write
 Transfer Speed(8GB): Approx. 19MB/sec Read; 13MB/sec Write

hi there, I could only find transcend SDHC with 8 gb in town available, but the guy in the shop told me i can return it if it does not work.

So my question is: what is he best test i can do to prove if it works ok? maybe to record at highest rate for a big amount of time continously (say, 4-5 hours) and then playback to check there are no errors?

thanks

That would be one thing.
Maybe also record in that time some sort of sine wave (low frequency?) so that errors can be easily spotted.

Just got my Edirol R-09 and I believe it came with v1.30 firmware.  It came with the "Practical Guide" and a sheet explaining all the features of v1.30 firmware.  I don't know how to check the firmware version to verify, but all the features listed in the sheet are there in my recorder.  Can't wait to take this baby out to a concert!

FWIW, I bought mine through Sound Professionals.  I was not expecting the latest firmware mainly because of the sale price.  I figured they were unloading old stock.  So I am delighted to be proven wrong.

does anyone have a zipped up 1.20 firmware still that they could send me.  I have the 1.20 installed on my new unit and plan on upgrading to 1.30, but would like to have the 1.20 to fall back on if necessary.

can you just usb the r-09 to the computer then drag the only DMZ file over to the desktop and copy, then upgrade to the 1.30 version,

sure, i imagine i could do that... i just assumed that the firmware flashed something to the unit, kind of like the jb3 and ihp-120, in addition to the file... hense i thought i needed to "install" it.

thanks for the info! +t

You can copy by USB or you can take the card out and put it in a card reader (or I stick it in my laptop) and copy the files over... then one step in the menu and a confirmation... and done

I don't think that solution works guys. My cards never have firmware files on them. Once the firmware is updated to the actual unit, it doesn't need to be on the card anymore, you can obviously take a brand new empty card and the firmwire will still work fine. I think the firmware files either self-delete from the original card after installation, or they're just removed the first time you reformat the card afterwards. Everytime I use any of my cards, there are only wav files on them and nothing more.

I'd like to have an answer to this as well, before I upgrade at all because then I would no longer have any other firmware to fall back on, just in case I encounter any "Card Error" problems or anything else. My original copies of the older firmware files were on a HDD that died, and I didn't think it was important enough to back up. Thanks if anyone knows something or can help.

What question are you actually asking?  Once you upgrade the firmware, it should remain updated.  You don't need to keep it on the SD card in order to load the firmware each time you use the R-09

Sorry, I just realized it was unclear. I edited two words in my post to make it less confusing.
I was referring to the discussion in the 4 posts above mine.
Thanks if anyone has any ideas.

I have the 1.20 firmware file somewhere on my work computer, but just go ahead and upgrade.  If something goes wrong, come back here or email me directly and I'll send it to you.

You can download v1.20 here:

http://www.rolandus.com/support/downloads_updates/eula.php?FileName=R09_v120.zip

BTW, in searching, I found the latest version is now v1.31 (includes support of SDHC cards up to 16 GB/32 GB)

edit: I guess I knew that already since mine is already at v1.31  ;D

That link seems to be dead and doesn't work.

I knew about the v1.31 firmware, I just posted in this one instead because I remembered the discussion about trying to roll back to an earlier version.
