Newbie....Help with starting up

I would like to learn about the right equiptment for my situation.....I always wanted to get into taping but never had the money....now i have it and have a few questions...

1- I want to tape my friends band who plays once a month at a local coffee shop....small with about 100-150 people noisy

2- My budget is around $500

3- what is the best bang for my buck set up

there's a very similiar thread a few down from this.... I think the same advice applies, this should at least give you a start
