Title: Help with hat/md set up
Post by: alienbobz on April 14, 2003, 05:23:51 PM
Hey,

I am pretty new to this taping thing. My setup is at831s > SP-SPSC-1 > sharp md-mt55. I am thinking about stealthing the ben harper and jack johnson show at the gorge. What would be the best way to do this? I talked to someone else and he said to put the mics at the back flaps of the hat. I am thinking that it would be more visible if I do it this way because I will be outside. Anyone got some suggestions? Also, I am trying to get some better mics. What are some good cheap ones? Any help would be great.

I wouldn't worry too much about your mics being visible.  Once you get your shit inside I doubt you'll have to worry.  Just clip them to the headband of your hat as close to your ears as possible for excellent binaural results.  Just stay away from all the screaming high school girls.  Although I doubt that is possible at a Jack Johnson / Ben Harper show ;)

My impression on both of them is that they like to be taped but they are with big-name labels who don't like it so much.  Your setup is small enough you should have no problems at all.

That guy must suck.
D00d, don't worry about getting busted at the show. Not going to happen. I used to talk to the crew and soundmen with my old mics and wires sticking out like a sore thumb. No one really gives a shit.

Thanks for everyones help. I do know that Jack has an official taping policy, but I don't know about Ben. The strange thing is that a lot of the people who listen to him collect his concerts. Hopefully my copy will come out great :P.

Ben doesn't support it openly...one of the dumbest things of all time...he has a live recording section on his website, but you cant openly tape....absurd....and this crap about his label not letting him...he, just like any artist could get a taping policy in place...it is too bad cause he makes damn good music and puts on a good performance.

ya jack has an official unofficial taping policy...what ever the hell that is?  ben is againts taping and then has a live trading forum....wtf?  oh well i'll be taping all their shows i go to this summer..i wouldn't be too worried about gettin caught.  i've been to 3 jack shows and been searched 2 out of the three times...but it was a half assed searching..i could have been carrying a shotgun and they wouldn't have found it.  once your inside you're good to go....i wouldn't worry about security.

Ben is not against taping in the least.  He talks about how much he likes 'bootleggers' on the DVD of Bonnaroo.

Yea the bootleggers comment always irritates me. Then he says "get me a copy....I'll end up buying my own stuff."

Go Bootleg!
Go Bootleg!
Go Bootleg!

Exactly my point.  ;)

Ben is worried about people selling his shows. The B'roo clip makes it obvious.

That is a weak argument too.  The best defense to selling shows is to enlist a taper and trader network which is self regulating.  Look at DMB, the Dead, etc. and you will see bands where very few illegal bootlegs make the rounds through bootleg sellers....to me, Ben is either misinformed (as most record companies are), or just doesn't see it being worth his time to deal with.

There was a Ben Haper interview in this months stuff mag.
He said something about taping. I will go reread and post on it later.
