Title: How to solder 2XLR > Stereo 1/8" TRS?
Post by: travelinbeat on September 06, 2011, 10:06:14 AM
Can anyone help with a diagram and / or detailed explanation of what the wiring for this would look like?

thanks for that very much--

wait... does that have what I'm looking for anywhere?  I see TRS > XLR M, XLR F, but no XLR F x2 > Stereo 1/8" TRS.

Convention for Tip Ring Sleeve connectors whether they are 1/8" or 1/4" is

Tip = Left
Ring = Right
Sleeve = Ground

from this you go to your xlr's.

FXLR (left)
Pin 1 = Ground
Pin 2 = Left
Pin 3 = Ground (a jumper to pin 1)

FLXR (Right)
Pin 1 = Ground
Pin 2 = Right
Pin 3 = Ground (a jumper to pin 1)

The jumpers between 1 and 3 in the XLR convert balanced signal to unbalanced.

If your soldering skills are lacking (or in a pinch if a cable fails, like mine did on Saturday), you can also use a 2) MRCA to 1/8" cable stereo cable and RCA to FXLR adapters. These adaptors are wired the same way.

Whether you jumper 1 and 3 together is not universal.  If you have a "cross coupled output stage" then you jumper 1 and 3 together.  If you don't, then don't.  WTF is a cross coupled output stage, and how do you know if you have one?  That's the problem... you don't know.  If you can find a description for your particular device, follow what it says.  The manual for a V3 says to use pins 1 and 2, and float 3.  http://www.gracedesign.com/support/v3_manual_RevE_online.pdf  Fig 4, page 6.  Other pieces of equipment may say the opposite.

The whole balanced <-> unbalanced thing is never simple.  It's like male and female animals.  You are one or the other.  Trying to switch from one to the other is just a bad idea. ;D

Here's a schematic that tgakidis linked me to last week:

Get your soldering iron hot and tin the tip. Then touch the iron to the area to be joined just long enough to heat it to the melting point of your solder. Put the solder against the joint--NOT the iron!--and a little will melt and flow into the joint. When this happens, take the solder and the iron away from the joint, and you're done.

After you pull the iron away hold it still until it cools completely. It should be smooth, bright and shiny. If it looks lumpy or dull the join won't be as strong, add a touch more solder and reheat until the solder flows. Tinning the wire by adding heating the end and allowing solder to wick into it also helps.
