Title: Recorders paired with V3
Post by: Elana on May 25, 2022, 04:26:42 AM
What recorders are you pairing with the V3 these days, especially analog recorders? I'm looking to have a smaller setup but still use the V3 because I like it  :)

Right now I use a V3 via SPDIF out to an R44. When I want to take less with me, I only take the R44 (which has the oade supermod). But I still like the sound coming through the V3 better.

I was using a DR100mkii when it first came out but I had a lot of issues w/ the spdif connection to the V3 and I didn't want to go analog. Plus I don't really like the dr100 that much so I rarely use it.

I have a little R-07, but I don't know where I put my dual XLR > 1/8" cable so I haven't tried it yet.

My v3 has the toslink out port installed but I'm not really seeing optical on newer recorders.

I believe the PMD661 has SPDIF.

Yes.
Can’t personally confirm the 661 jives with the V3..  but the 661 (both SPDIF coax and analog) is a great unit!

… but I can confirm that the Tasman HDP2 jives well with the V3.  HDP2 is a wonderful deck, although would be considered big these days.

Most newer, smaller handheld recorders drop these types of features in lieu of real estate on the unit itself.  I ran SKM140, V3, R44 for years and if you have what you already like then why change it now?  I used to use an AES to SPDIF cable to go from the V3 to R44.  I stopped using the toslink jack when I dumped the JB3

Sony d50 works well with the optical

I had a 661 and got rid of it because I didn't like it, but this was before I got the V3, so I didn't try it as a bit bucket.

NVM, I had the 660, not the 661, lol. And I sold it after a year. I'll check the 661.

For travel mainly. I hate taking all this stuff with me when I need to get on a flight. I have plenty of options w/o the V3, looking for options with it.

Cool thanks. This is quite small too. How's the internal battery life?

There are pics of the 661 on eBay.  I zoomed in and on one side is a coax digital in.

I still run my hdp2 with my v3. Not only is out of date but it's bigger than what you're probably looking for also.
but thats what I pair with my v3 if I ever get out anymore.
I have the optiout on my v3 as well but the p2 is spdif so it is irrelevant for me now.

I always use an external battery for it, sorry.  It uses 4 aa batteries.  You can also use a micro tracker as a bit bucket for the spdif.  I do this often as a backup.

I have/had a MTii. I can't remember if I sold it or not, or where it is if I still have it. It failed on me a couple of times but I can't remember if I ever paired it with the V3.

Does the V3 need an update from Grace to jive well with the D50??
Or am I thinking of a different deck?

Does the V3 Mic inputs run hot?

I have a Shure fp24 and need attenuators to use it for anything louder than acoustic guitar unamplified.

I have run both a MixPre and a V3..  and nothing that I have encountered runs as hot as a MixPre.
YMMV.

I second this. kindms mix-pre ran hot as hell. (but was the BEST small footprint pre I used with the M10)

I use my HDP2 when using the V3.

the HDP2 in my experience locks on to whatever digi signal you throw at it w/o complaints but certainly not small

I considered going a raspbery pi solution for small form factor and SPDIF. with a touch display but didnt pursue it. you could probably get an optical connector with a pi as well. Small and most of them run just fine on regular 5vUSB
