Title: Denon vs. Marantz?
Post by: nlights on October 20, 2005, 04:06:08 PM
marantz 8400 vs. Denon 3910
I was looking for a universal player in this price range these two seem to be pretty close in comparison used and refubished

Im not only locked into these two brands, but have heard promising things on both..... I was looking first and foremost for 24/96 playback of live recordings.

both: 2 channel and Multichannel for SACD; as well as the Video playback(Is THX certified worth while) as well B/C this will be my only disc player in my viewing/listing room.

Anyone done personal comparisons?  Any help greatly appreciated...

If it were me, id get the marantz.
only for the reputation of their bomb-ass transports.

I've had a Marantz 8300 for a while.  It was the predecessor to the 8400 duh.
I love it.  It plays everthing with ease.  One point, it does not like dvd-a's burnt
with Discwelder Bronze.  It would never play the last track and was scetchy on the FF & Rew.
But this was ONLY with Discwelder DVD_A's.. Wavelab 5 DVD-A"s work like a DREAM.

Same with the 8400.  We have one in out theater showroom, and we also have a
Mark Levinston transport, and I cannot tell a difference with my ears on regular cd's.

2-ch & Multi for SACD sounds incredible. 2 channel through the Egglestonwork Savoys
is really stunning with placement of instuments in space and overall depth of soundstage.

While I have never heard the Denon, I don't think I will ever feel the need.
I vote Marantz.

I have to agree that for mostly music listening the Marantz would be best.  Might also want to check out the Onkyo SP-1000.  The Onkyo has both the best video and audio I've seen/herad out of a universal.

What do these players typically street at?

I have typically found these with warrenty from reputable dealers for $900.

Any other suggestions for anything in this price range??

MSRP I believe the Denon is $1500... Marantz was $1799 this was last years model.

I've been very happy with my Marantz DV7600.  You can probably find one at your local Marantz dealer for about $1000 brand new.  It plays, DVD, DVD-A, SACD, Redbook, etc.  Has played everything I've thrown at it.

I love my Marantz dv6400 Universal Player, but it's had to go back to the factory for a new motor and firmware (2x).  I got mine the first model year so hopefully they've got the kinks worked out.  Anyway, Marantz has great customer service if yer wondering.
