Title: CA-9100 Settings
Post by: darktrain on October 14, 2007, 04:33:23 PM
So if i was reading through the forums right, it was stated that at a point the 9100 Actually attenuates the signal? Did i read that wrong or is that accurate and at what setting would that be, just turned on? So confusing all this stuff. I want to pull a nice recording at Van Halen this week and I feel my best setup would be the HLSC's>9100>120 or would a 9v BB be better? I will be about 150ft dead center behind the SBD.

I believe Chris has said that 11 o'clock is 0db.  Anything before attenuates the signal, anything after amplifies.

So then that could be a very good thing at a loud Metal show, so much info its hard to absorb it all sometimes.

Yes, 11 o'clock is unity gain.  Before that you are attenuating (don't know how much).  I'm still getting use to my 9100, but I did pull a nice recording (at least to me I think it is) of Derek Trucks Band in about the same circumstances as you.  I used the 9100 at 12 o'clock and the iHP140 at 0 gain.  Being a louder show (I'm assuming), I would start out at 11 o'clock and work from there.  Hopefully there will be an opening act for you to check levels with.

I only record metal shows and I love having a 9100.

I would agree to start at unity and then adjust the 9100 as needed.

So you guys start at 0 gain on the iriver? Then all the gain is from the 9100 from there?

Get your gain from the preamp and not from the iriver.

^^   What he said.  Keep the iriver at 0, unless its a quiet show then you will probably need gain from both.

I am a believer! Just got back from Van Halen and pulled a great show. Using The HLSC's>9100>H120. Had the iriver gain set to 0 and the 9100 ended up around 11:30 on the dial and very happy with it. I am sold on the pre getting better results.

Excellent! Not much gain with the knob at 11:30...VH must have been loud.  ;D
