Mini xlr connectors
« on: April 07, 2004, 01:17:40 AM »
I got my connectors from Markertek today. They seem ok, but not overly bomber.

The first thing I need to figure out is how to get inside them to make the connections. I unscrewed one half of the connector off, and the only thing accessable is the strain releif. Looks like the innards of the barrel must come out somehow. I don't see how and don't want to force anyhting. Anyone know how to get at the contacts on these?

matt;
here's what i recommend.

1. simply pull out the innards and you'll see something similar to the photo (w/o the cable of course)
2. the guts of the connector are in 2 parts: #1 and #2 as in the photo
3. slide the cable through #1
4. make the connections to #2
5. crimp the #1 as you see in the photo

Makes sense, thanks. The problem I'm having is getting #2 out fromt he metal housing. Does it just slide out? Is there a tab to release? Seems very tight and I'm reluctant to force it.

matt;

it slides out through the back of the housing.  just use a pen or a blunt probe and push it back.

Heh. He said "blunt probe".
<beavis laugh>

Thanks. +T for the help. I won't get to try it until tonight or tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

Do you by any chance have the pinouts for these connectors on the AT mics (what color to what pin)? I requested that from SP when I ordered the Samson adaptors, but they have not yet arrived, so I don't know if they will include that info or not.

hehehe.. i actually thought about using alternate words for "blunt probe".  ;D

AT's mini cables have 5 conductors: 2 Yellow, 2 Red and shield

pin assignments:

Yellow conductors > Pin 2 (+)
Red conductors > Pin 3 (-)
Shield > Pin 1 ground

this information is from the original connections from my AT853a mics, so i know it's good.

bon chance!

here's a scan of the minixlr guts.  notice that pin 2 is at the bottom rather than on the side of pin 1 (regular xlr pin config).
