Advice please on small recorder for concerts
« on: March 31, 2022, 03:19:08 PM »
I need a new small (stealthable) recorder for concerts. I had a Tascam DR07 and it died in a rainstorm. I had a Roland R-07 and it went missing. For mics I have Sound Professionals SP-CMC-4U Audio Technica Premium Audio Technica Cardioid Stereo Microphones with low-sensitivity option and Church Audio CA11 with Omni caps and I have a battery box. I’m focused on small size (bc stealth), good sound quality, decent user interface (as I’m an occasional taper and want something intuitive) and ideally under about $250 or 300 max. Suggestions? What say you? TIA

Sony PCM-A10 is my pick. Completely controllable from your phone, nice battery life, and internal mics sound pretty decent. They're on backorder now but you can find them on ebay.

I have a Roland R-07 that I'll sell you - purchased here a year or so ago -> https://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=197119.msg2359448#msg2359448

I've played with it a few times at home, but haven't run it live - bought it for a use-case that I'm no longer really interested in...

I paid $100 including shipping, and I'll sell for that. (and if you're in the US). Hit me up if interested - happy to provide pics, etc.

Agreed on the A10 if you can find one. Super-small, great quality sound when used with external mics (and the internals aren't bad at all), and the bluetooth control is wondrous.

Since the OP plans to use external mics but not an external pre-amp, it would be perhaps useful to him to know which small hand held recorder has the best internal pre-amp.

That one cost € 757,70 new. Any good one -and new- below € 200?

Keep looking. Just because someone is selling it for that doesn't mean that is what it costs. Retail (when in stock) is around $229. Folks have bought some on ebay recently for around $270.

Just make sure you don't buy a Japanese market version. Menu's are in Japanse only and cannot be changed.
Also some of these units are not optimally assembled. I had to return mine due to "sticky" control buttons.

Does the A10 do phantom power?

Small recorders without XLRs don't do phantom, only PIP.
