Blind Mic test Comparison
« on: May 21, 2022, 11:49:40 AM »
I have made for my own comparison a controlled comparison between some of my HQ gear.

These are of 1 studio recording song through my Yamaha HS8 monitors 4 times in a row with different gear.

Anyone care to sight differences in these samples....i'd be curious to hear some thoughts.

Interesting experiment. I am thinking of doing something similar as I do some modifications on tweeters and caps on some Klipsch KLH-20's I picked up today. I downloaded and focused in on 2:00-2:45 as there is a wide variety of tones/material there I have a favorite, for me, on my headphones with my ears. I don't want to post it to pollute others' thinking if they take the challenge. PM me if you want to know my pick out of the 4 and why.

for the record, 3 was my favorite as well

My Prefs

Best  -  Test 3
Second Place - Test 4
Third Place - Test 2
Least Best  - Test 1

To me, there was no clear winner between 2, 3, and 4.  I found it especially hard to choose between 4 and 3, I ended up going with 3 because I perceived a bit more detail.  I liked the balanced presentation of 4, though it could be that 4 seemed to have a bit less volume than the other three.

I listened through a Fosi Audio DAC-04 and Sennheiser HD-700.

3
4
1/2

3 and 4 were close.  4 was possibly a little crisp for my taste, but both 3 and 4 were nice.  1 and 2 were a toss up, but would lean toward 2 if it was just between them.

3-4-2-1 but 3/4 were close and 1 was certainly my least favorite.  So by tiers it would be:
3/4
2
1

I did something similar about 15 years ago before purchasing Schoeps.  While bench tests provide some information, the best test is in the field under less than ideal circumstances, e.g., noisy crowd, back row of theater, etc.
