Which replacement/successor for Zoom H2?
« on: September 26, 2022, 07:26:11 AM »
Hello,

So I've been recording with my old Zoom H2 for many years and had trouble recording loud Stadium shows, vinyl Rips etc through the line in.It seems to distort when having loud and or bass heavy signals even though the record levels are way under 0db

Now I read that the distortion of the Zoom h2 line in has been known for years :(

I would like to buy a new recorder

I record with  Soundman OKM I and a battery Box where I use the low cut and the -20db pad

I was thinking about the Roland r07,does it handle louder levels better?

Anybody ripped vinyl with it? (So phono preamp->line in of r07)?

Thx for help :)

PS I might Upgrade my mics to Soundman OKM r or any other low sensitivity option,as I am from Germany,Soundman would be the cheapest

I've used the H2n w/ great success, in recording at clubs & larger venues.

My trick, is to just set the record level @ "0" (off), & bring up the volume in DAW. Whenever I've tried to run the levels I've always got distortion as well, &/or just an unpleasant tonal quality.

I'm not sure how the H2 compares w/ the H2n, in this respect, but, you may try that.

The newer "F" series field recorders w/ 32 bit are pretty outstanding, but, then you have to also have mic's & cables.

Thanks for replying but I do not want to buy another zoom recorder because I fear that I would have to deal with the same problem (the strange line in behaviour that is) again.

mini inputs that share mic & line can be problematic, regardless of which mfgr.

The F series, uses XLR inputs, so, you'd have a different setup altogether. The 32 bit theoretically should not distort.

I feel your pain though...
