Starter Mic Recommendations
« on: April 29, 2005, 02:58:09 PM »
I'm looking for some starter mic recommendations (yes, I have run a search as well). Here's the deal - I'll be running into a stock digi-mod UA-5 > JB3, mostly acoustic shows with the rock show every so often. Usually smaller places (300 or so people). I'd like a flat sound if possible. Normally I have SBD access, and would like to run an on-the-fly matrix most of the time (yes, I have read about the delay issues, etc.), so the mics main use would be for matrix applications, generally for some ambient room/crowd sound + drums if they aren't mic'd much through the SBD. I would, of course, also be running mics solo (no SBD) for bands that don't allow SBD access.

My budget will be somewhere along the lines of sub $500. I've been looking at a used set of AKG 391's, new SP C4's, and new AT3035 (I'm intrigued by the LD mic). Anyone have any recommendations based on those 3, or anything else I should looking/hearing? I've heard some nice C4 tapes - any limitations on being 40-20KHz?

Lastly, I don't have the extra cash now, so if you're looking to unload your mics on me you'll have to wait until mid-summer, more than likely :)

the ua5>c4 combo sounds really great. The c4s are great IMHO, and im sure others will chime in. Especially for the price, a great set of mics.

I'm not too familiar with the C4's but the AKG 300 series would be good - interchangable capsules, etc.. can't go wrong with that.

maybe some ADK-SCTs?  they are SD... or some ADK-LEs?  they are LD, fixed cards... i think they both fit your budget, or just close to it... you could up your budget by a little bit (to 650-700, used) and get some ADK-TLs, and have 4 polar pattern LD mics... i like mine and would recommend them to a beginner... they are my first set of mics.

I'd never heard of the J-disc before, but I found this website, and it looks pretty cool! Probably would sound great at the Kent Stage too. +T
