Up is 54v for running actives w/o bodies. Down is for 16v phantom or acts as a -10db pad. Use in the up position with your active cables. Use in the down position if you were wanting to add a -10db pad. You will not hurt anything by using the down position but your recordings will be 10 db less than what they should.
