encoding 24bit with TLH
« on: June 19, 2010, 01:57:03 PM »
so im getting around to tracking out my 24bits from this year for the first time.  im tracking them out in audacity(cd wave editor only does 16).  after i get the show tracked out, i transfer from wav > Flac in TLH but when i play the FLAC files in foobar, the kbps is way under the standard for 24 bit.  is there a problem doing 24 bit with TLH?  any help would be appreciated.

CD Wave tracks 24-bit, no problem.  Be sure to check "alternate 24-bit format" when saving.  The kbps readout will not always be as high as it can be for 24-bit.  The same goes for 16bit, but seems to be more so at 24.  I'm guessing this is do to the increase in headroom.

perhaps i need a newer version of CD WAV.  the real concern here is the kbps readout.  so you are saying i should not worry about that?  the files are still about twice as large as the 16 bit.

More bits are allocated for 24bit files so they will be larger regardless of your levels.  I just played a handful of 24bit files (recorded and downloaded over the years) and got levels of 1100kbps, 1400kbps, 1600kbps, 2100kbps and 2300kbps.  I'm not absolutely sure what causes this.  My guess would be levels and amount of info recorded.  The sample rates varied amongst the files.  Hopefully someone can chime in with corrections/clarifications.

thanks for the input.  looks like you are right.  when i go wav > FLAC > back to wav the resulting wav still has the kbps reading im looking for.  still a little unsure of why the reading would be different during playback.  just glad my files are still the original higher resolution.

TLH won't seem to let me encode my 24bit wave files to flac or fix SBEs.  I am using wave lab to edit>CDwave to track> then TLH keeps telling me is doesn't support 24bit.  Do I just need to download the newest  TLH?

and you need to uncheck the sector boundary button for 24 bit.  sector boundary's are only for 16bit.

I've never been able to encode 24/48 files with TLH.  I have version 2.6.0, build 168.  I see version 2.7.0 is available, but I am not able to download it either from their website or via the Update interface within TLH.  Both ways, it's stalling in the middle of the download.  I know that I downloaded this 2.6.0 no more than a couple of years ago.  Is this version not supposed to support 24/48?  I don't have the align sector boundaries box checked, but I get the message "file format not supported".

Are you using CD Wave to split?
I typically track in my DAW software and use FLAC frontend to encode 24/48 WAVs instead of TLH, but when using CD Wave to split 24/48 files I would get a similar file format not suppported encoding error upon encoding the FLACs unless I checked the use alternate 24bit format option box in the CD Wave file save dialog.

Well Gutbucket has posted what I was thinking also.  Another thing that has caught me is saving a file in 32bit from my editor.

I use Cool Edit Pro 2.0 for the splitting.

I just tried again and was successful in downloading the newest version of TLH.  I figured that would take care of it, but it didn't.

Argh.  I think you're probably onto something.  The files are recognized by CEP as 32-bit, which has always seemed to be the default working environment.  What's the correct way to save them as 24 bit, and is anything valuable really lost?  I resample/dither a set of 16/44.1 files using the Batch File Convert option, but the only bit depth options are 8, 16, and 32.  I apparently need to adjust my workflow, but am not sure how given the options that CEP seems to be giving me.

If using CDWave, make sure you hit that checkbox...  TLH will bomb otherwise.

I almost always seed both formats, people like wasting bits.

I'm using a much newer version  Audition CS5.5. But in the CS5.5 and V3.0  when you open the file in waveform view go to edit > convert sample type > you get a choice via a drop down menu.  OR use something else to get bitrate you want.  R8brain, is a good quality and free.  I always work in 32bit realm and save that way too.  I either use the convert sample rate under edit, or if I want to get a little higher quality I use Izotope RZ advanced.  But Izotope is not free.  I'm not sure of batch settings and I still use cdwave for tracking.
