another wireless thread...

question:  I've got a netgear 802.11b wireless router installed in our basement, and up until now have had no problems accessing it from my docking station on my lappy 2 floors above that.  Now, all of a sudden, the coverage has been spotty at best, and it really lags in speed.

Is there any way to boost the output of the router or my nic through add-on kits?

Would it be possible to extend the antenna to another area of the house using some rg-8x and some crafty soldering skills?

I'm a ham radio operator but my antenna knowledge is severely lacking above about 200MHz...

lee- first question- have you moved things like microwaves or other things that put off competing fq's around the house at all?

check into one of these: http://www.cantenna.com/
also look up 802.11 antennas on google

you could build one.

Ok. first off, the cheapest option is prolly another access point.  I have 2 downstairs and have no problems with coverage anywhere in the house.

If you don't want to go the multiple AP's route.

Do the following:

make sure that you are on channel 1, 6, or 11

(they are the only non overlapping channels)

check for other AP's - your neighbor might have set up on the same channel or adjacent channel and is causing interference. (see www.netstumbler.com for ideas for looking for other ap's)
