Festy Power; Turning Gear On/Off vs. Letting It Run
« on: July 17, 2013, 11:13:11 AM »
OK, we're heading to a festy tomorrow and there are dual stages...music is continuous and swtiches between side-by-side stages.  This is the most intense weekend of the year as far as battery capacity needs.

I'm gonna have two rigs going.  The side stage acts average 30 to 40 minutes and the main stage acts are 60 to 90 minutes.  Obviously, I'm going to turn the side stage rig off when the main stage acts are on, but I'm thinking that giving the main rig batteries a rest between sets will help to extend the battery run-time versus just allowing them to run continuously.  Anybody disagree or have any actual data to support this thought...or can anyone confirm that battery power usage is a fairly linear thing where you get X hours of runtime out of a battery regardless of whether or not it's continuous?

I'm running two separate rigs and will turn each one off in between sets just like you buddy ;)

I should have plenty of power since my rigs only take AA and 9v batteries

The batteries should only drain when something is drawing from them...

The school of hard knocks suggests being careful about turning things on and off and to make sure you will have time to get back and forth to rigs and to remember every part of what you need to turn off and on.  The more variables involved the easier it is to be late or to miss something...

If you know your run time and it's more than adequate I've come to be in favor of leaving things running/having extra batteries.  You can stop and start to break the files into smaller chunks, though even that can introduce room for error at the end of what is usually a long and tiring day...

My recent experience I ran audio for two stages (which were going simultaneously) basically nonstop for 12 hours or so each day.  The video was the thing I didn't have continuous power for and of course I wound up missing at least part of a song of that each day from sets I had wanted to record (though mostly from distractions with other obligations)...   I'm out of practice though.  In the old days we'd run at least three stages with two also running video over five days and not miss anything we wanted...

if you have enough battery to get you through an entire day and have access to power for recharging at night, you've got the option to let it run or shut it off in between sets.  based on your post i assume this is your situation.  if so, play it by ear.  you may end up doing a bit of both.

I haven't counted lately, but I'm working on my 40th music festival, so I'm experienced at power management.  I don't like planning for a recharge during a festival so I have enough power for the whole weekend, but I take my rechargers just in case something happens, because rechargeables seem to go dead at the worst times!  From personal experience, there's NOTHING worse than being a taper at a festival without any battery power (or spare SD card space).

For this particular festival (All Good) I've figured out my power needs with enough conservatism that I should have enough power for the whole weekend.  Unfortunately, I'm pushing the upper limit (if my conservatism assumptions don't pan out) and don't have alot of slack to use the set/forget method.  I do like that method best though.  :)

So, I'll probably do a combo of on-off and leave it running.  Fortunately, the stages are side-by-side so there's not alot of running that needs to be done, but there's no doubt that forgetting to hit 'on' using the on/off method is a concern and a lesson from past fests.

Tonedeaf and thunderbolt and I let our gear run all day/night at all good since we recorded both stages with one pair of mics. I did run my mk4 setup separate for a few bands buti mainly ran my mk41 rig the entire weekend ;)

 Came out killer!
