JB3 external power probs are over
« on: July 14, 2004, 12:09:29 PM »
psst.. the oade cable that powers the M1 from 6v SLA works on the JB3 :) same size and all.   they add diodes that drop the voltage 1.2v for the M1.  i just connected it to my JB3 and powers up fine and plays. the ac power plug led is lit.  I havent tested a recording on it, but there shouldbt be any reason why it wouldnt be fine.

the only issue would be putting a batter connector on it for your particular brand, ie: ecocharge, home-made etc.

I will do a run-time recording test tonight with a 6v 4.5 Ah and see how long it records for successfully. if i can find some diodes, ill be happy to mod your existing cables car adapter cable along with a 4.5 aH battery :)

or call oade brothers and buy your own M1 cable

Oh, btw... ill be using it tonight to tape Stockholm Syndrome. the cable i have is a Y cable that powers both the M1 and SBM1 from one 6V sla.  well tonight it will power the JB3 and an SBM1. :)    the only quesztion i have is, should i leave the batteries in or not. I guess that can be a later test..

ok well.. back to the drawing board. it runs and records, but i noticed the JB3 being kinda flaky. the times on the files were all wrong, and also I noticed the battery cable getting warm pretty fast, so i aborted about like 5 minutes.   im thinking maybe my voltage wasnt high enuf? the M1 oade power cable, has 2 -0.6v  diodes, knocking the voltage down -1.2v total to 4.8v.  when i connect a multimeter to the JB3 AC adapter its putting out 5.5v. so i might need to try the cable with only one -0.6v diode to be almost a perfect match to the jb3 sc adapter.

ok, i know what my probs were. the JB3 draws 2.4A, and the diodes in the oade M1 power cable are less than 1A. so i need to grab a couple 3A diodes to use. Ill have this made soon :)

That's a lot of juice! So I guess a 4.5 Ah battery would only give about 2 hrs recording time, huh? Got to work out the weight/time ratio when those batteries start getting big!

The JB3 doesn't consistently draw 2.4 A.  Hey Dr....did you measure the draw during start up?  Measure it again during normal recording?  Based on anecdotal evidence of people's run-times with different battery solutions, I believe it oughta draw 250-500 mA during normal recording operation.

well, im just going by the specs on the AC adapter for the output. says 5v  2.4A. so im guess maybe it needs to be able to burst to that when it wants to. like i menationed it was working, but the JB3 was acting strange and the power cable got warm.  like a couple times when i started it up, and hit record, it turned itself off. then after it was recording for a few minutes and the cablke was warm, i tried to stop and turn off, and it was not responding to my attempts so i had pull the pwer plug.  the wavs sounded fine tho incidentally, but the timestamps were all wrong too. then when i went back to normal battery recording, things were ok and the timestamps were correct.  i asked doug oade about the warmth of the battery cable, and he said the draw mustve been too high cause the diodes on the M1 pwr cable are 1A diodes. Im gonna hit ratchack in a bit and have a cable made soon and will let u all know :)

excuse my ignorance, but why not just go to walmart and buy the 15 dollar adapter that alot of ppl have been using w/ great success, seems like your putting a lil too much effort into this ;)

im talking about powering at shows with a 6v. (same one that powers the sbm1)  im assuming you are talking about using a car adapter with a 12v??

ahhh, my bad, i did miss that part, sorry bud ;)

yeah, that would be hella cool to use 6v's :)

I got a little concerned about having enough go-time at Wakarusa, so before I left, I built a little adapter that runs 4 Ni-MH batteries (~5.5V) into the JB3.  Mine got really flaky when I did that.  In fact, I pluged it in to tape one of the bands when the batteries got pretty low.  It froze up about 10 min into recording.  I stuck a little wire in the reset hole to reset it and started recording again.  It froze up again about 5 min later.  I completely lost the show.  Finally, I plugged it in again and just let it sit for the rest of the set and it sat there and just recharged itself off the external batteries and didn't crash.  I had enough juice then to get through the next band.

In closing, the only two times my JB3 weirded out on me was with an external Rat Shack-style external battery pack plugged in (at the recommended voltage I might add.)  USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

yeah thats the prob im having. like other people have already mentioned, this thing is flaky about the power!!  i thought i had it right using the using 2.5amp diodes to knock the voltage down, but the cable still got hot and unit was flaky when recording.  i think i just need to find the perfect spec diodes so there is a perfect voltage match with the AC adapter voltage.  but.. im thinking its not really that big of an issue since i have 4 internal batteries now, and can run long enuf for almost anything
