Sony TCD-D100 vs Sony PCM-M1
« on: July 26, 2004, 08:40:56 AM »
Hello,

Question from a newbie - I'm considering purchasing either a Sony TCD-D100 or a Sony PCM-M1 that will be used initially for stealth taping only.  If these two dat recorders nearly identical are there any major upgrades availabe on the D100 that would make it the better choice of the two?  I'm sure that many of you can tell me which way I should lean on this one - thank you for any and all suggestions!!  I am aware of the "no SCMS" with the M1 -

hot licks > microphones > recorder

...ball of confusion, that's what the world is today, hey hey...

i have one of each. d100 is silver, m1 is black. :P

all kidding aside, they are identical in performance (minus the scms issue, which, to me, has never been an issue.)

d100 comes with remote, m1 does not. Might be usefull for stealth situations.

The M1 also has peak-hold meters, which the D100 doesn't.
Mics: Microtech Gefell m20/m21 (nbob/pfa actives), Line Audio CM3, Church CA-11 cards
Preamp:  none <sniff>
Recorders:  Sound Devices MixPre-6, Sony PCM-M10, Zoom H4nPro

the d100 qualifies for sony's fixed-price consumer repairs when out of warranty, while the m1 doesn't.  This can be significant if/when a major repair (such as head replacement) is needed, as the fixed rate repair price is less than the parts cost for a new head.  If you're planning on x-fering recordings to a computer, the scms issue is a "non-issue" -- it would really only be an issue if you're using 2 consumer dat decks.

We had Schwinns with names like Apple Crate Orange Crate --- Banana seats and high-handle bars just like on the Fat Albert cartoons.
Now that's old skool .
