Blumlein Question...
« on: January 22, 2006, 04:10:58 PM »
This question's being carried over from http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=19866.msg760058#msg760058, figured more people would see it with it not being buried in an older Schoeps related post.

Anyway, would running Figure 8s in a config like the one below be considered Blumlein? The pic below is cardioids @ X/Y, and isn't Blumlein basically just Figure 8s X/Y? Do they have to be vertically on top of one another?

Right now nothing...in the past: Schoeps CMC6, AKG 480, AKG 460, AKG 414, MBHO 603a, Neumann KM100, ADK TL>Schoeps MK4, Schoeps MK2, Schoeps MK41, AKG ck61, AKG ck62, AKG ck63, Neumann AK40, Neumann AK50, MBHO ka200>Lunatec V2, Lunatec V3, Apogee Mini-Me, Oade M148, Oade M248, Sound Devices MP2, Sonosax SXM2>Sony (mod)SBM1, Apogee AD500>D7, D8, D100, M1, R1, R4, R09, iRiver HP120, Microtrack

While not ideal, I'm sure it would give you that blumlein sound.  My only concern is that the mics would actually interfere with the rear lobes.  Of course, the rear isn't as critical as the front, so if there is some reason you'd prefer to run the side-by-side (mounting hardware, windscreen, preventing visual obstruction, etc), I'd go for it.  In the right situations, blumlein sounds wonderful.

the mk8 is kinda funky.... the fig 8 pattern is not a dual diagphram design..but single. I should be able to do some blumlein since i have the CMTS 501.
