I've got a pair that terminate in a stereo miniplug.

No, you should use 9V 2-wire setup. Ie., a standard (SP, or otherwise) battery box.
Something about the guts of those mics helps prevent overloads. (I think) there is at least one extra transistor in there (emitter follower) and probably some sort of source resistor ("4.7k mod") on the FET. Would love to see details if anyone is brave enough (
) to look inside!
