Adding ADC-20 to my setup???
« on: December 21, 2003, 06:03:56 PM »
So, as of now, I am running AKG 391s > Samson Mixpad 4 > Sony TCD-D8. What I'd like to eventually run is 391 > Wmod UA5 > D8. But, I probably will not be able to afford the ua5 until AFTER summer which sux. So what I was wondering, would it be bennificial to add an ad converter to my rig untill I get the ua5. I know Ill tape a TON this summer, so it would be nice to beef my pre/ad section up as best I can, and I see all these adc-20s going for under 200 which is what I will be able to afford before the summer.  So Id be running 391s>Mixpad>adc>20>d8. Would that help at all, or will it not make much of a difference??? THANKS!

any a/d would be an upgrade over the a/d in the D8. not sure what the pre section in the mixpad sounds like but the dmic20 sounds pretty decent with the 391's.
I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

do it alex.  I just got a DMIC-20, haven't used it but i think you'll get a lot of detail with the ADC-20.  I say go for it.  The things are cheap as anything and would be a huge advantage over the ADC in the D-8.  That just blows.  But you might wanna pick a DMIC-20 to get rid of the pre in the mixpad.  you can't tell me that the mixpad has the best ease of use.  3 9v that you never know if they're charged, plus the 4 volumes you have to worry about (trim, channel level, main level, d8 level)  DMIC-20s go for about 300 w/o battery.  Listen to Bean's tapes, a lot of detail.  Im just not a huge phan of the UA-5 too much phluff for me.

Totally go for it! I think John R is selling an ADC-20. Figure out if you want to keep the Mixpad, then choose the DMIC or the ADC depending.
