Edirol R-09HR Vs Tascam DR-100?
« on: September 19, 2009, 11:59:21 PM »
so.. this will be my second upgrade of my recording gear, in the past i upgraded my old mics giant squid omnis for a SP-CMC-8 (Cardioid w/ low-sens mod).. so now is time to upgrade the recorder.. that currently is an iriver h320 rockboxed with upgraded battery (i will still use it with the giant squid omnis for record the gig from another spot in the arena), so.. in my research i found Edirol R-09HR that was my first choice but then i found the Tascam DR-100 and now  I'm confused about which one choose..  i see that the DR-100 has XLR inputs (which will be maybe the next upgrade for my gear) but i found some reviews about the battery life using the DR-100 as a Preamp with the XLR inputs .. sucks, also i found that it has a line-in input so i could use it with my mics that has 3.5mm connectors ... so.. with the Edirol R-09HR i can get later a good preamp with XLR input right? as i'm using for now only a battery box...

As you can see i'm a bit confused and maybe my english doesn't help for explain more lol.. so please give me your thoughts about both devices.

Best Regards

Roland

The DR-100 sounded great to me until I read about the abysmal battery life when using phantom power. You would need an external battery or a preamp to provide the phantom power anyway in order to get good battery life.

The R09-HR is a great, reasonably priced recorder that lots of people on this board swear by. I would go with the HR and run your SP mics line in with a small battery box to power them (Church Audio has one for $30). When you're ready to add phantom powered mics to your arsenal, get a MixPre or Naiant Littlebox to power them and also to provide some more clean gain when you need it. You could use something that provides phantom power only, but I prefer the flexibility of a preamp. Besides, the Littlebox doesn't cost much more than a phantom power supply and it also provides 32 dB of clean gain. The MixPre costs a good bit more but provides more gain and has a number of additional features. Either would be a great choice.

Hi

Check this link to listen to sound samples using internal mics of different recorders:

rolandx has the right idea not mentioning relying on internal mics.

Even if they sound good, which most don't, you can obviously get better placement with externals. From what I've heard, the D-100 does have pretty good sounding internals though (probably better than the HR), if that is important to you. The only recorder that I'd rely on for internals is the Chris Church modified R-09 Micsketeer, which I often use for non critical recordings and as a backup recorder when running 2 rigs.

Sure external mics are better regarding the stereo seperation etc but it is practical to have good internals to have a quick setup during rehearsels for example. So I would check the internal mics also to have both options...

I have the r09hr and dr07 and like the dr07 better.  I'm not sure how much the dr07 sounds like the dr100.  re: built-in mics, the dr07 sounds much much better than the r09hr.

And I read somewhere that the dr-100 and dr-07 have the same preamp and adc.

Hi, thanks to all for the answers.. so.. the DR-100,DR-70 has a better internal mics than the R-09HR.. but the preamp that they has wouldn't give me better results than using an external preamp? and well also they lacks of good battery life ... i don't think i will use very often the internal mics.. and I'm pretty happy with the SP-CMC-8 .. mmmm at the end will be a good choice get the R-09HR and prepare my budget for get a MixPre (found a link with a mixpre at $665.97 ouch) .. btw if you can give some good advices for the configuration of the R-09RH for this setup:

SP-CMC-8 -> SP-SPSB-10 -> R-09HR

after get the R-09HR i need to plan the next upgrade (maybe in 6 months)... so for use the a preamp with phantom powered mics i will need to mod my SP-CMC-8 mics right?.. or it would be better get also new mics?.

Regards.

I have the r09hr and dr07 and like the dr07 better.

Can you elaborate, Craig?
Assuming you're feeding both recorders line-in with your Church combo, what's the sound characteristic like? Which aspects differ?
I'm surprised, after reading about the extremely low noise floor of the R-09HR (guysonic's plots, etc).

I have no experience with the HR but you might find my post in this thread interesting.
