Although Marantz's marketing department must have some target market in mind for the CRD310, who they are escapes me at the moment.
The machine has the strange requirement that you configure the hard disc (a whopping 5 GB drive) to one digital format at a time. That is, you have to choose to record in WAV or CD-DA or MP3 or AIFF format for the entire disc. You can't record a WAV file, then switch to an MP3. To switch formats, Marantz makes you format the disc! I suppose they chose to do this to avoid any extra processing when it's time to burn a CD.
Note also that when burning a CD, the recorder must be sitting level on a table, and not be subject to any shocks. So forget about recording, and then burning a CD on the drive home. I bet the 8 AA batteries won't run the CD burner for more than a couple of discs.
The CRD310 has some nice features: XLR mic inputs, 10 second pre-roll buffer, digital coax out, large and simple controls, relatively compact package.
But a 5GB hard disc? Why not 8GB of flash memory built in? Or better, on a Compactflash card? And why only 16/44.1? And why $800?? You could buy a perfectly good PC with CD burner and a Microtrack for that money.
