Could a dynamic cardioid mic with a response from 20-20K work for field recording if it didn't have a "proximity effect"? How is this differing from a condensor other than a lack of phantom power?

I'm thinking along the lines of the AKG D202 (now d/c). Would too much gain be required?

Another example is the D224, also now discontinued. Sorry if I'm missing something obvious - I did browse the archives and do a search, and I understand the basic difference between dynamic and condenser.

So without trying it out, I guess there's no way of knowing really how well it will sound at higher levels (rock concert). And without nice clean gain, recordgings will suck at low dB acoustic settings if the mics are far from the source? I'm asking all this because there is a pair of 224s up on ebay for pretty cheap. I haven't seen them before, but the curve looks interesting. Probably too much money for something I would rarely be able to use. Thanks
