Sound devices 788t vs 664 Audio Comparison
« on: August 31, 2013, 11:11:52 PM »
I realize this is probably a ridiculous question, but I've received great advice on this board before so hopefully you will all be kind.  ::)

I am on the fence between the Sound Devices 788t and 664. I understand (I think) all of the pluses and minuses of these operationally, but am curious about the audio quality.

Does anyone have experience with both devices?  Specifically, I'm wondering about preamps, dynamic range, limiters.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Here's a tech note Sound Devices published comparing the 552 with 7-series recorders that, while is doesn't answer your question directly, may provide a useful framework for your decision: http://www.sounddevices.com/notes/general/552-or-7-series/

Glancing at the specs, the 664 shows some audio-quality improvement over the 552, but still falls short of the 7-series recorders in input noise (preamps, mostly) and (the 788t's) dynamic range. I have no personal experience with the models you are considering (mine is a 744t), but I think the earlier note's conclusion remains valid: if superior audio quality is your chief concern, the 788t wins. Otherwise, you are probably well-advised to choose between the two units' other attributes.

If you are in the USA, I would go for the 788T

If you are in the UK or mainland Europe, I would also consider the AETA 4MinX or Nagra VI (the 4MinX being about £2,000 cheaper than the Nagra and roughly on a par with the 664 price wise), both these are equal in quality to each other and equal or better than the 788T audio quality wise IMHO.
