Topic: Help setting up a Marantz PMD-430 cassette recorder with a Microphone(s).

I just picked up a Marantz PMD-430 Cassette recorder and need some advice on what mics to use with it.

I have a pair of Beyerdynamic MC930's, would there be a way to use these with the recorder since
they will need phantom power?

From the manual:
"Will accept any low impedance microphone utilizing a standard 6mm phone plug.  When using stereo
microphones which use on plug for both the left and right channels, insert that plug into the L (Stereo) Jack."

I don't want to spend to much....but i'd also like to know my options.  I imagine there is some sort of adapter I could use?

A quick and dirty solution might be something like this

But you still need to unbalance your signal.

You might make a post in Microphones and ask about powering options for the Byers - I think there a few guys around who know the power requirements and the best practice for getting an unbalanced signal from them.

I would suggest giving normal bias tapes a try - and use noise reduction.

I did some experiments a few months ago with Dolby C and normal bias tapes - and was amazed how good the result was.

Also - if you have the capability/gear - just remaster anything you record to digital right away...no point in the extra wear and tear on the recorder - and you'll get the best transfer possible.

Wouldn't it make more sense though to use something that would have XLR inputs for mics and 1/4" outs for into the Marantz?

I realize this is an old thread, but it looks like it didn't get resolved, so here goes.

I have an Art phantom power supply I use all the time for my Beyerdynamic shotgun mics. My recorder (PMD66) has XLR inputs, but I've used them with other recorders by using a line matching transformer to convert the balanced XLR to an unbalance 1/4". I use the Shure A85f transformers, but these look good too:
