Small, inexpensive HQ audio recorder with mic in?
« on: August 31, 2005, 12:32:07 PM »
I have a friend who is looking to do some voice aquisition and would like a small digital recorder (mp3 format is fine) with mic in and level control. Something like an MD or a flash recorder would be good. Looking to spend about 250-300 bucks...

Any thoughts?

MicroTrack? $350. It will come with some mics it seems. Not out yet though.

But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can

The R1 is a bit more than that, but offers more functionality and has built in mics as well

I'd go with a Hi-MD.  Assuming they offer level control, which I think they do.

They do. You have to go through the menu (Rec option) every time before starting the record, but you can set it.

Before starting...does that mean levels are not adjustable on the fly while recording?

No, you can adjust on the fly(Rewind/FF buttons lower/increase level during recording) . The point is that the default is AGC (Automatic Gain), so you have to switch to manual (Pause the record, browse the menu to Rec Setting, set to manual ...) before the actual recording.
