Title: Sony M10 MicroSD Card Summary (what works and doesn't)
Post by: stevetoney on August 11, 2011, 12:28:33 PM
I just finished sifting through all five volumes of the Sony M10 forums and several other M10 threads to get a summary of the microSD cards that people have used successfully and a couple that have given people problems.  Here ya go.  Please feel free to add to this list with your own experiences.

Kingston. It's this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134717
Maybe I just got a dud. It's a Class 4 card. I'm under the impression that is fast enough (or do I need something faster).

[Update: The first one I ordered was a dud. Got another of the same exact card and it's been rock solid ever since.]

Miscellaneous Notes

Class 2 cards are really S-L-O-W at transferring files to your PC, compared to the Class 6 cards, but half the price for any given size. (Mike Davis)

(fmaderjr)
I have had lots of trouble having my Transcend 16 GB class 2 card recognized. Works perfectly but usually takes 3-4 tries to be recognized.  I just leave it in the recorder and use the recorder as the card reader.

The take-away from this thread? Buy a Sandisk!

This is the transcend I'm using:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208453

Or: Transcend 8GB Micro SDHC Flash Card Model TS8GUSDHC6

I ordered two and they work flawlessly and transfer rates are around 15MB or so.  Pretty zippy.

Just be careful...I've read that Sandisk is counterfeited rampantly on ebay, so best not to buy Sandisk off ebay from China.

Buyers have reported that the counterfeits work, but they're often Class 2 in spite of claims they're Class 10 or something similar.

I would never recommend the use of eBay for purchases of this nature.

Buy your new equipment from a reputable retailer like b&h or newegg. Leave eBay for the vintage stuff.

You could buy the cards from ebay and be fine. I wouldn't recommend buying it from someone in China or who is selling a lot of the same cards. Also, if you do get the card, there are ways to test it to see its actual read/write speeds.

I don't see why you'd buy something off eBay when a perfectly good card is available from a reputable retailer such as NewEgg for $12 (shipped).

If you're so cheap that $12 is too much money...you need to find a different hobby. I would suggest walking...or better yet...sitting.

:) :)  Mike, I don't think Sean's comment had anything to do with being cheap or needing to save a couple bucks.  I took the comment to be more pointing out that Ebay can be a good resource with dealers that are every bit as reputable as newegg, but just be aware that there are frauds out there that use ebay.

Personally, I find the frauds to be fairly easy to ferret out using some basic ebay/internet precautions, a questioning attitude, and some common sense.

I know alot of people that absolutely refuse to use ebay out of fear of the predator.  I personally kinda think they're crazy and depriving themselves of a good buying/selling resource, but that's just me.

That said, I don't disagree with your logic that, for a small dollar item, you might just want to go with a newegg and eliminate all possibility of getting ripped off from an ebay seller.

FWIW, I bought a 32GB Chinese knock-off Sandisk card on ebay for $14.50.
I didn't intend to have this for critical use, but I've tried it in my M10 and it works fine.
For proper taping, I'll use something else though.

Sandisk 32GB class 4... came with my Thunderbolt HTC phone from Verizon, but works in the M10, 14+ hours (but realized the card had data on it, so probably would allow more time)

Famous last words.  :P :P :P Used the Chinese card as a backup this weekend, and two out of four files were corrupted. Lucky to have other tapers covering for me.
For critical taping, I'm using Kingston MicroSDHC 8GB (Class 4) right now, no problems so far!

Ok, I ordered the new 64gb SanDisk and it does not work in my M-10.  I do very long field nature recordings. The 32gb SanDisk works great so I was rather disappointed that the 64 gb was a no go. I bought it from B & H so at least I can return it.

IMHO, being that the 64gb are so new, I bet a lot of "current" devices wont read them... but probably something a firmware can fix

The Sandisk 64GB card is not compatible because it is not a MicroSDHC card, it is a MicroSDXC card. Cards over 32GB have to be the new XC specification, and older gear like our little Sony will not be reading those due to hardware incompatibility. Note the logo in the graphic says XC.

Meanwhile, I wonder what the "I" is for? Speed class?

We have a Marantz PMD 661 recorder. It came with a Marantz 4gig card and that works fine.
I tried using a Transcend 8 gig class 10 card and it records and plays fine. Problem happens when trying to download the file into the computer. Macbook pro with Intel processor and Mac G4.
The Marantz card is recognized immediately. The Transcend card either isn't recognized, or takes forever. Using the recorder's USB output to transfer the files.
Thanks
Thom

Here's how I did it:  http://www.head-fi.org/t/456327/sony-pcm-m10-as-portable-player/120#post_8727898

And here's how I use it:

Do you even get the batteries to run as long as it takes for the card to fill up?  Isnt that about 14 hours of time to fill the card?

Samsung 32GB microsdhc 10 class  MB-MSBGA/KR 8806071556239

Bought two of them recently from an eBay vendor.  They will format and are recognized by the M10.

Unfortunately, during continuous recording, only the first file is written cleanly.  All subsequent files written are corrupted during continuous recording.   Ran them yesterday afternoon, and again in the overnight, with both my recorders rolling.  Today, I put in my trusty Transcend 16gb Class 6 cards, and they recorded and wrote continuous without any file problems.

NOTE:  I did put one in my Samsung Galaxy S2 phone.  Formatted with Jelly Bean with no issues, except only 30.2 storage space.  Copied an entire show I recorded, 16 bit flac.  Played it with Winamp Android app with no issues.

Skalinder-shrugs on this card     ???

I have a card that a previous user stated works perfectly that consistently gets format error.  I've tried 2 cards of the same model and have tried reformatting, yet in my brand new M10 (received 2 days ago from Adorama) neither of them work.

SanDisk 16GB Micro SDHC Flash Card Model SDSDQM-016G-B35N - no go!

However, I did have a SanDisk 64GB MicroSDXC and followed the directions on here and that card works with no issues.  I really wish I could use the 16GB cards though seeing as I have 2 of them and that's a bit more practical for my applications.

Edit:  Strangely enough, I had the M10 perform the formatting for the 16GB cards and now they both work.  I would have tried this earlier but didn't realize the option to format is under "Detail Menu."  It's a good thing the M10 is better at recording than it is for menu navigation!  Format the card in a PC: Format Error every time; Format the card in the M10: works A-OK!
