JB3 file renaming question
« on: April 04, 2004, 08:46:54 PM »
i got a question for those who use the jb3 for playback, or know alot about it.  i've transferred a lot of albums to my jb3.  about half way through the transfers i realized i could change some of the album/artist info prior to the final transfer to the jb3.  does anyone know how i can recognize the files in "my documents" under the jb3 as an external harddrive?  can i change the album/artist info?

im a lil confused, but you CANNOT change file names once its on the jb3, it MUST be done externally!!

i just asked this question at nomadness.  a guy said you need to use either creative's playcenter ( which i looked everywhere and couldn't find a way ), or notmad, or some other software.  notmad does the trick just fine.  what i had done originally was transfer an album ( cd ) with artist name too, and artist name with album name too!  and genre.  follow me?!  all i wanted to see under artist in the jb3 was the artist name, not the name of the album too, and same for album :)  so if i "browse" artist i'll see only the name of the artist!  and if i browse the albums all i'll see is the name of the albums.  ok--anywhey, notmad allows you to see all the audio files on the jb3 and allows you to rename but doesn't mess with the tunes themselves.  hehe...

In playcenter, you just click on the file, then click again  to rename it - just like in windows (not a double-click, two single clicks)
KM 184 > V2 > R4
older recording gear: UA-5  / emagic A62 / laptop / JB3 / CSB / AD20 / Sharp MT-90 / Sony MDS-JE510
Playback: Pioneer DV-578 > Lucid DA 9624 >many funny little british boxes > Linn Isobarik PMS

the way i do this is in playcenter:

rip a cd
find it in "my computers" ( in the playcenter--left side )
choose the whole cd
and click transfer
i'm prompted for album/artist ( usually written already ) and genre before the transfer happens--this is where i should've made my decision about what i wanted on the jb3 regarding naming.

the problem is/was renaming the cd ( folder ), not the tunes themselves.  in notmad i was able to rename the cds ( folders--while they were on the jb3 ), thus really creating a "jukebox".  i hook my jb3 to my stereo, find a genre ( jazz ) and it plays jazz tunes at random.  if i prefer to playback a cd i choose that particular cd and play it.  i transferred over 20cds in the last couple of days, stuff ranging from jazz, new wave, rock to classical.  pretty cool device--wish i had gotten one with a larger hd :)

yep,
and i'm more intrigued about using one for recording.  seems alot of you are feeling confident that you don't need a dat backup.  i've read a lot of the threads, subscribe to the jb3tapers group, and read the nomadness forum.  i'm about ready to give it a try.  i think i'll sell one of my d8s and get another jb3 for recording.

so bean, you don't use a dat anymore?

With the playcenter left side source: ie CD right side JB3 when you rip tracks to your JB3 you can input info. I put artist-date-set info here to save me time later. Then after I rip my tracks to my JB3 I right click the track on the right side of the screen(JB3) side and select all. Then I edit album/artist/genre all at once but make sure to leave track 01, track 02, etc before each track if you want the show to play in the right order. When I rip a show to my JB3 it looks like this:

Track:                                Artist:     Album:               Genre:
Track 01-gd-08-27-72-I     GD       gd-08-27-72       Pschedelic
I hope this helps because I learned the hard way after tranferin' hours and hours of shows.
Peace
