Title: 5V external battery pack
Post by: SClassical on February 08, 2007, 11:29:23 PM
Can someone recommend a stealthable high capacity 5V external battery pack? Can be a fixed voltage battery - don't mind. Thanks.

i can make you a custom cable that drops the voltage from any feed higher than 7.6v to 5v.
:)
to eliminate a 2nd battery, this is a good option.  especialy if your main battery has plenty of juice.

I guess it depends what you define as high capacity and what you want to use it for.  This is the battery I use with my MT:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190080253476

I'm pretty sure I got it from the same seller.  Or do a search on ebay on "external ipod battery" and get one like it.  This one is 2200mAhr, which should allow you to run a MT for 6-8hrs. (including some support from the internal MT battery).  You can also get 3200mAhr batteries of the same type and form factor from other sellers.

This battery actually puts out 5.5v, but it works fine with the MT and I've done some short tests with the H120 and it seemed to work.  I don't know about using it with the finnicky JB3.  As to size, pretty easy to stealth with I'd imagine -- about the same footprint as a MT and about half as thick.

I run my JB3 with a PP-99 LiOn pack and it works great. They run about $30. Google it.

Don't seem to find the PP-99 LiOn pack when googled..

Don't need one with a USB plug but with a normal mini cylinder type (usual) plug.

Also, 2200mAhr is equivelent to having 4X AA NiMH batteries at 550mAh each? If so it doesn't seem a lot.

At the moment I have this Power runner PR32XX model:

http://datamind.co.uk/merchant/acon_Mod_2_Introduction.pdf

Set at 5V, the capacity is 7.2Ah.

Was looking for something similar in capacity but more stealthable (smaller).

Anyone know if there is anything better than my current battery?

QFT.  Digital Concepts PP-99. (http://www.google.com/search?q=digital+concepts+pp-99&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a)
(switchable voltages)

I have been using one for over a year now and it runs the JB3 for well over 3 hours.  I found a second one recently on Amazon through a 3rd party for about half of what I paid for the first one I bought.  The PP-99 has been discontinued so they are hard to find.  I would keep looking.

does the PP-99 come with various tips?
i can't seem to find any mAH numbers for this pack. can a user chime in on this one? thanks!

Yes, it does come with tips.  I think that the mAh's may be somewhere deep in the remote power board.  Maybe a search for pp-99

I wanna say it's 5400, but I'll look when I get home.

Yep, in the scheme of things, 2200mAhr is not all that large of a capacity, which is why I was wondering what you wanted to use it for.  2200 does not equal 4x 550mahr AA batteries, at least as we usually use them.  Most equipment we use will have the 4AAs wired in parallel to provide 6v (or 4.8v with NiMH), so the 2200mah pack would be equivalent to using 4AA's that are 2200mah each wired in parallel.

I also use the Dig concepts PP-99.  They are now discontinued, so they are harder to find.  I thought they were around 4000mah to 4500mah, but don't know for sure.  They are about 2-3x as large as the pack I linked above, but it is a nice powerpack and really not too large at all.

So it all depends on what you're trying to do and what you consider stealthable.  Which makes me curious -- what are you trying to run and for how long?  The power draw of the H120, R09, MT, JB3, etc. isn't all that much, so a 2200mah pack should give at least 5-6hrs of runtime -- which is far more time than I ever like to do stealthing. :P

Thanks for your replies...I was planning to power my MR-1 recorder which needs 5V to power. Without external power it only runs for about 2 hrs using the internal battery.

This link shows a battery with capacity 3600mAh (13.3Wh).

Does it mean it is equivalent to 4X AA batteries each with capacity 3600mAh in parallel??

This looks like a high capacity stealthable battery...

5400 mAh....anyone know if this is available in US?

Both of those batteries look like they'd do the trick.

I guess you could say the 3600mah battery is about the same as using 3600mah AA batteries wired in parallel.  Easier though if you know the current consumption of the MR-1.  I have no idea, but with a modern design and good attention to power management, I'd take a total guess that the MR-1 consumes 300 to 500mA of current.  So a 3600mA-hr battery divided by 500mA of current draw, means 7.2 hours of record time available from the 3600mA-hr battery.

Thanks! I think the safest will be using the 5400 mAh one. You can get this in ebay which is tempting:

MR-1 has a consumption of 2.15W and takes in 5V...So 2.15W/5V=0.43A = 430mA

Battery is 5400 mA/hr

5400/430 = 12.55hrs running time (seems good!)

This one's not stealthable, but just got off the phone with the rep at the company and it has a whopping 11,000 mAh at 5v!

This one's more stealthable, and still has 3400 mAh:

I'm doing the exact same with my MR-1...

I'm a bit confused from the page - can it provide power to say, the mini-usb on my Microtrack 2496, or must you use one of the regular round dc connectors it comes with?

Similar question: someone gave me a LilSync 4 AA pack that takes either alkalines or NiCad (according to the Web site). The retractable cable he had with it is usb on one end, but some sort of specialized connector on the other end (wider/flatter than USB, and locks into place).  Can I get a LilSync cable to use this pack with my Microtrack?

Interestingly, I tried hooking up the LilSync pack to my Microtrack using a conventional USB cable plus an a Radio Shack adaptr to get to the right mini-usb size, and nothing! No juice from battery pack to Microtrack.  Does this pack really only work with LilSync brand cables? Bizarre!

Sorry for the really beginner type questions - I'm not at all a IDIY type.

thanks
Chris

To PP-99 LiOn pack users, need some help.

I just got a PP-99 LiOn pack.  I have charged it all weekend and I thought the red lights were supposed to come on when fully charged, but no llights come on.  Do the lights come one when using it to power something?

Lights come on when you plug in the output cable.
