if its just for personal use get one off the shelf- who cares for that stuff if it resamples... most cards seem to have 1/8" in

ebay, holmes.

for the record, what is "cheap" to you?

(I use an m-audio 2496, which is great, runs $120-$140).

You could buy a cheapo $20 card from CompUSA that has stereo 1/8" in.  I'm pretty sure most of the 1/8" in's are stereo.  You sure he doesn't have one on his machine now?

Almost every soundcard has 1/8" stereo ins.  I'll give you the one that came with my computer for free if for some crazy reason his does not have it.

I have an old ISA soundcard with an 1/8" you can have for the cost of shipping.  But if it's going in a newer PC, it likely won't have an ISA slot.

If he wants something with a digital in (possibly for later use) athough is not bit perfect. I would go for a Sound Blaster MP3+ USB. It is USB, which is nice, has optical ins and outs, and phono plug ins and outs. Also comes with an adapter that makes the phono ins 1/8" stereo. As with any analog sound card though, make sure you mute the microphone input (and shut off whatever amp it has in it) before recording. I got the mp3+ for around $50 new from Circuit City. Its now 39.99 there. Here is a link.
