Amd Athlon processor info?
« on: March 10, 2004, 01:04:14 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these. Specifically I'm looking at a new desktop that has the Athlon XP 3000+. Gamers seem to really like them from what I've read. The specs suggest that they are slower that the competition however.

I have used AMD extensivly since 1999, I love them...I would never buy a pentium(well..maybe not never), for the price difference..you cant beat AMD...the hyperthreading tech from pentium is nice...if you have the money..but I really think that AMD multithreads as well as the pentium still.  go to http://tomshardware.com and you can find MANY reviews and comparisons...i do think you will be pleased with the AMD tho.  esp one that speed..  THe most importnat feature of a computer(once you get into HIGH speed proc) is the RAM..

for a lappy i'd go intel.  For a desktop athlon will work but buy a big badass heatsink, these suckers run hot as hell.

This is kind of nitpicking but if you're not going to overclock your cpu a stock fan/heatsink is fine IMO.  The thing to be concerned here is that the fan/heatsink is properly attatched and a good thermal compound used.

i like AMD but i recently had one die on me because the heatsink fan was all gunked up and wasn't providing enough air movement.  this happened about 4 months after i bought it.  the heatsink i used was the one that came with the chip and it still burnt up.  just be careful.

Put an air filter on your intake fan.
