Klipsch Synergy III 8" 2-Way Dual-Woofer Floorstanding Speaker

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6781324&st=klipsch&type=product&id=1091101346130

i'm new to the playback department.  i'm just starting shopping for a new system.  looking to start buying in a year or so, maybe longer.  i'm in no rush.

my dad has had some old wooden cabinet Klipsch speakers for nearly 20 years and they still sound amazing.  anyone familiar w/ these linked?  i heard a demo at best buy and they sound pretty damn good going through that Yamaha receiver they used.

where's a good starting point?  reciever, speakers, ???

Here is a good website to frequent:

http://audiogon.com/

I'm in the same boat as you. I want to put together a decent system. I'm probably going to go the used route. I think speakers are the most important item.

So far I'm thinking about going this route, although I need to do a little more research:

Reciever/Amp: Sony DA-3000ES
Speakers: Epos M5
CD/DVD-A/SACD player: ?

speakers #1 on the list. These look decent, go around to some audio stores and listen to a bunch of different brands to get an idea of what's out there. Some good brands in this price range are B&W, Paradigm, PSB, NHT, Von Schweikert, Infinity, just to name a few.

fwiw, Klipsch basically has 2 "lines" of speakers - a line that's cheaper and created for the big box stores, and a line that is for higher-end audio.   I bet your dad has some high-end klipsch, as the new, big box line is relatively new.   My advice would be at $400/speaker, you can get a lot better speaker if you go slightly used...

$800 would get you a pretty sweet pair of used speakers from audiogon - you'd prolly be much happier that route.  I'm a klipsch guy, and I'd steer you away from their models in the big box stores.  I have Klipsch Heresy II's from the early 90's, and the clarity and efficiency is ridiculous, but they need to be coupled with a sub.  Some of their other models could easily suffice sans sub.
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

What pfife said.

I also love Klipsch speakers and have been very happy with my KLF-20's for several years now.   I got them at a closeout price of $800 when Klipsch discontinued them, for the pair.   I'd bet they'd blow away the ones you're looking at.

Also picked up Klipsch synergy model surround speakers. IMO, they pretty much suck.  At only about $150/pair, I guess i got what I paid for.  Point is, stay away from Synergy and try to get higher end Klipsch.

I see the KLF line on ebay occasionally for < 1K.

you'd have a hard time toping these for the money, imo.

i'm going to own a pair of the M22's eventually.  I was so impressed w/their m12.2 monitors...the flagship floor-stander must be nothing less than awesome.
