hey thanks and +T to whomever responds to this:
Is the UA-5 stable recording 24/96 to a g4 via USB? (Can I use a few more acronyms in here?)
Thanks.

Yep, just make sure you turn the "Advanced" switch to on. Made that mistake the first time I tried...

ty, +T John :-)

Right back atchya. ;)
Oh, I should note that mine was on a G3, not a G4. ;D
-
Hmmm, i thought USB 1.1 couldn't handle it. Why aren't more 24/96 recordings made? I only see 24/48 being released.
-
Hmmm, after some calculating 24/96 would nowhere near max out the usb 1.1 bus. So I guess I have to ask why more 24/96 recordings aren't coming out of laptop taping.
-
Probably because too many people are trying to record on that flaky OS, Windows... ;)

Does that really have something to do with it? I'm going to try some 24/96 tomorrow. How can I tell whether or not I'm dropping samples? Would running Linux really improve the stability?

I've got plenty of 24/96 under my belt. It's still not a 100% flawless setup for me yet, though (some beta software). I was at 100% success with Digital Performer 3.11 and 4, but that has the damn file size limit with no workaround other than to stop and start again. Spark is flaky on my machine and has crashed during both recordings and playback.
I was under the impression that USB 1.1 can't handle it as well. I use a FW device, so no issues there.

+T to all!

Yeah 24/96 almost maxes out the transfer rate of the USB 1.1 bus, which is why you can't do full duplex 24/96 - you have to set the UA5 to either 24/96 record OR 24/96 playback.
Using a USB2.0 controller might acheive better stability... Obviously the UA-5 will still operate at 11Mbps max, but the USB2 bus has a higher maximum bandwidth.
Good luck!

yah the g4 is enabled with usb2.0 so i might give that a go
-
Well here goes some 24/96 tests. Wish me luck ;)

Good explanation of the benefits/drawbacks of 96khz...

Alright so I recorded 24/96 with my UA-5, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it to playback. I even tried switching it to 16/44.1 and playing back a 16/44.1 file and no dice :(. Anyone know what I might be doing wrong?
-
Do you have a modded UA-5? From what I understand they will not play from the USB if they've been modded...
-
Damn, yeah I do :(. Great, now I need to find a 24 bit sound card for my laptop :(.

No idea if it's bit perfect or not, but if you're just using it for playback, who the hell cares? ;)
