DAT> hard drive help
« on: March 22, 2004, 01:14:47 PM »
With the help of some folks on the board I got my DAT player and I got my sound card.  Now I'm having a little trouble getting these DATs transferred.  I've had success w/ a few but not w/o some hardship.  I'm recording straight into CD Wave and for the most part its working fine.  However sometimes it just freezes up and doesn't record anymore.  This is quite a pain especially if I'm an hour or so into a show and have to start over again.
Would getting better recording software help?  I've tried Audacity w/ similiar results.  I'm looking at Sound Forge 4.5 (mostly because its looks to be about the best I can afford).
Also, anyone know of places to get good prices on software.  I'm not really looking for the latest and greatest, just something that's realiable and relatively user friendly.  Thanks.

Shane

i use soundforge 7.0 and haven't had any problems with it yet.  What type of sound card are you using and how is your dat connected to it.  If you are looking for software look in the dark places of the internet you will find what you are looking for.  I have not used cdwav or audacity to transfer my dats so i can't help you with that.

I have an Audiophile 24/96 USB soundcard.  Hooked up via:
DAT> coax> spdif in> usb
Will I be able to do everyhintg I need w/ Soundforge?
ie- record, resample, split, & fade

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Check it out. I use the same card. You can record in two tracks, tons of editing stuff. (I still use CDWav to split into tracks...).

Works great, more features than you will ever use.

Also, if you are running into a disc problem, wait until some crowd noise between songs,, hit pause on your DAT and start a new file. Not perfect, but not bad either.
