FooBar 2000 is cool too, small footprint, low cpu usage.  http://www.foobar2000.org/

as important as the low cpu usage is the fact that you can turnall of the dsp crap off. all those stereo wideners, eq, volume, etc. is dsp that alters the sound. in foobar, you can get rid of all those things, and simply playback your music.

it handles 24/96 playback, too (assuming your hardware suppors it)

does winamp acutally play back at 24/96 when you play 24/96? i suspect it does because my 24-bit sound card does some funky stuff when i switch between 24 and 16 bit files...but does anyone know for sure. also, is there a newer winamp with gapless playback?

I don't think so.
I also hear a huge difference in playback between Wamp and Adobe Audition.
I guess Wamp doesn't really "Whip the Llama's Ass" afterall.

Winamp definitely outputs true 24/96.  But it does sound crappy, IMO, and I'm guessing it's related to jitter.  See my post above.

Yeah, I've noticed a glitch in the ESI Juli@ driver that causes misdisplay of samplng rates. It sticks on the previous rate.
I found a work-around and wrote ESI.  I also can't get the driver to control analogue input.....    :P
I think that I need to reload after blowing away all of my old sound drivers.

I was gonna suggest dbpoweramp, but...I don't think it'll do 24-bit.  Hmph.

so i'm using foobar today & i'm like "why isn't this working w/ SHN files?"
well maybe b/c it doesn't support them ? ::)

so i'm back to square one.

is there a program that does everything winamp does, but sounds good?

01. ability to play SHN and FLAC

02. does not tamper with the sound of the music file (ala winamp)

03. has the ability to play multiple tracks (ala a playlist, unlike wavelab or SF)

04. ability to play 16/44, 24/48, 24/96 ?

foo_shn my friend, foo_shn

It says it's for version 8 but I wager it will work with any version.

thanx brian, macdaddy & nick for your help. +T's all around boys.
i DL'ed the "special" & it supports SHN.  so i guess i'm back to foobar.  kudos to the developers of this software.  i still need to try it w/ 24 bit files though......

dude that wrote foobar was THE guy on the winamp2 crew that got the WAV output working properly. he bailed winamp and wrote fb2k. and AOL tried to f*ck with him a bit (if i remember correctly)...
