« on: August 22, 2009, 12:45:14 AM »
 mostly record metal and rock

currently use sp-cmc8 w/ low sensitivity mod>sp-sbs11>R9

looking for a stealth set.  200-300 range for the mics. willing to consider a new battery box or preamp.
the smaller the better.

What you have is pretty small as it is. Are you unhappy with that setup ??

There really aren't that many choices out there for anything smaller than your current setup, but these come to mind:

1) Church mics mentioned in post above mine
2) Core Sound HEB's - (spendy and out of the price range you list though)
3) Countryman B6  (a little bit above your price range)

4) Audix 1200 caps

5) Sound Pro super-cardioid mics - SP-CMC-25
http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,125651.0.html

There are others, but this might be a good starting point.

I have recorded many metal shows(Testament, Slayer, Metallica, etc...) with this low profile setup MM-HLSC-1's(4.7k mod) >mic in Marantz PMD620(set at -12) with very nice results, tried all the other mics and this is the setup that i went back to in the end

thanks for all the suggestions. those countryman mics are super-small and give new stealth ideas. but how well will they
handle metal?

those sound pro-cmc25 look great, but a sample would help. overall ive been happy with their mics, so i'd expect
these to be just a good if not better that the  cmc-8

At the size you're looking for, I really don't think you'll find much better than the CMC-8's. You could try using the AT853 caps with your CMC-8 bodies using the adapters. This will make the mics a tad bit larger on the front end, but the quality of the 853 caps is generally considered to be better than the 943's that the CMC-8 mics use.

I agree with Evan, I prefer the 853's over the 943's, but you do have to deal with a larger capsule in terms of stealth.  To get better quality sometimes means creative solutions in terms of bulkier gear.
Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

QFT.  The cardiods in particular have fuller bass response and overall sound.  It depends what you like to hear, though.  Some people seem to prefer recordings with no bass.  I won't mention any particular makes/models of mics, but some of the more popular ones, to my ears, have no bass at all and folks love 'em. The 853s have a fuller sound.

At about that same size, you could look into Audix micro caps with Church active cables. Available in hyper, card and omni.

If you want to hear some examples with the 853s, try my Mogwai recording on 4/29/09 that is on archive.org.  Not exactly "metal" but it's a very loud guitar-driven band.  I actually used light bass rolloff for that one and it still has nice low-end response IMHO.

think those have already been mentioned in post number 1673627

some other top contenders are the Church CA 11's and Church CA14's (they are both available in card and omni caps)
plenty of threads about those guys if you search them out
