Archiving of TV/FM broadcasts
« on: November 02, 2022, 12:02:28 AM »
I just recorded a couple of performances off of a television broadcast. DVR > line out > Sony M10. It was captured at 24/44 only b/c that is my default setting on the M10.

Question: is there any value in saving the 24-bit file, or even a 16-bit WAV/FLAC? where is the cap on quality on these broadcasts? is 320 kbps MP3 the way to go?

same questions for FM b'casts and any webcasts (typically captured directly to Audacity)

Thanks in advance!

DVB rips that I see floating around often carry 256kbps mpeg audio. I'd say 16 bit is fine if it came out of your digital cable box. Analog TV I think is close to an FM broadcast in terms of quality?

MP3 is lossy.
Old school analog TV had frequency response up to 16kHz, theoretically. Same as FM radio.

I don't know much about digital TV broadcasts but I'd hope they are better than what they replaced!?

"OTA TV signals currently use version 1.0 of the ATSC standards, which were introduced all the way back in 1996, initiating the switch from analog to digital TV that was finalized in the U.S. in 2009."

This implies that OTA digital broadcasts are using AC3, no idea about cable / DVB though

i looked at a quick freq analysis in Audacity. looks like it is around 20kHz. so it does appear to be higher than old fashioned TV.
