Hello all,

I recently recorded a show in a bar with a Sony CX-260. Recorded in FX mode 60i. When I got back I noticed that the footage came out with a strobe like effect from the stage lights.

From what I've read it looks like recording at 60p instead of 60i may remedy this. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with this?

Also if I switch to 60p are there any disadvantages?

Thanks!

- Ross.

The strobe effect is most likely from cheap LED fixtures. Upping to 60p may help. Disadvantage? Double the file size.

beatkilla....I'll try to get a quick clip online and link back here.

ScoobieKW, the lights at this particular club were indeed LED-tastic. :(

Okay here's a link, you can see the strobe mainly in this clip on the guitar player closest to the camera.

yep its the LED lights,  I have seen this occasionally but not found a solution.  Changing your shutter speed might help but im not sure.  I know it is very annoying.

Here is a 1080p60 video shot under LED lights, shutter at 1/30,  I also shot at 1/60 but it was too dark.  I didnt want to try a higher shutter speed since it was already very dark.

I shot the 1st song at 1080i60 and the flicker is a bit more noticable, that is why i tried 60p to see if it would help

Indeed. This is caused by the frame rate / refresh rate of the LED not matching up well with the shutter speed of your camera. As noted it's a problem with a lot of LED lighting rigs. Even the ones that claim to be video friendly in my experience. If you can adjust your shutter speed that is the first thing to try. Shooting in 60p may help too. You would have to give it a go to see.

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like I've now got my answer and can do little about it but accept it at this particular club! Ha.
