DVD Battery and PCM-M10
« on: March 08, 2014, 10:50:45 PM »
My apologies if this has been covered before; I am on a mobile device at a pub and didn't search for this.

I am curious, does anyone use a DVD battery, like the RB-270, to power their Sony PCM-M10?  I know AA battery life with the M10 is pretty good, but buying (and depending on AA batteries) seems a little archaic to me.  Why not just charge up a DVD battery and be done with it?  (Does Ted make such a cable?)

Input is appreciated, thanks.

Is the 'a' tip the one for all smaller recorders? Any idea what would be required for the Tascam dr2d?

The DR-2D uses a "B" tip

Can someone clarify something? That Tekkeon says it will "power 5-19v". Is there a switch on it to change the voltage? Or does it sense the power requirement automatically? Wouldn't feeding 5v into an M10 that requires 3v fry the M10? Or is there a couple of volt "wiggle room"?

There a several versions of Tekkeon Batteries.  The 3450i is an automatic voltage selector, the 3300 & 3450 are manually set.  I would not take the risk with the M-10.  Find a solid 3v power supply or use AA

OK thanks. I was confused because a couple of comments up (unless I read it wrong) I thought you were saying use a 3300 with an A tip for the M10?

Hope you had an OK time while you were here in Charlotte. You missed a great time at Tuckfest.

You are correct, the tekkeon 3300 has a 3v setting.  There has been talk in this thread  http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=166745.msg2091544#msg2091544  about this battery Frying low voltage recorders.

Cool. An M10 should run about 50 years on one of these....

To add upon what Ted wrote, I would avoid any and all of the Tekkeons that have that automatic voltage selection function.  Set it manually.  From what I've read here on TS and heard elsewhere, that function was the main cause of several Tascam DR-680s getting fried by Tekkeons when it sent too much juice into the decks while sensing the voltage.

I've never used regular AA's in any recorder that I've owned. I've always used rechargeables. I switched from regular NiMh's to Eneloop low self discharge 2000's when they came out and now my battery of choice are the Imedion 2400 LSD batteries. Whatever works for you is great, but personally I don't get turning a pocket recorder into a fairly large & awkward one by using a large external battery. How long do you need to record before you can switch out the AA's?

AT853's (all caps)/CM-300 Franken Naks (CP-1,2,3)/JBMod Nak 700's (CP-701,702) > Tascam DR-680
Or Sonic Studios DSM-6 > M10

Agreed, seems the best first step is to determine how long the m10 would run using a known-good rechargeable aa battery solution and determine whether the OP's needs will be met using internal rechargeable.  I've not yet tested the overall runtime for my m10 on internal nimh aa batteries, as it continues to read near-full after running it for VERY long shows with openers.

I'm a big fan of keeping things as simple as possible :)
