Topic: Schoeps MK4 & MK 41 stereo micing tecnniques

Anyone have a preferance over XY or ORTF?  Any others that people think are better?  I generally run with KC5's and am looking to see what more experianced Schoeps users prefer or think sound best!

From my fairly limited experience running MK4s, I've definitely preferred ORTF over X/Y. X/Y seems to cut even more low end from the Schoeps than other mics. Unless it's an extremely heavy bass situation (FOB @ Panic, etc.) I don't plan on running X/Y anytime in the near future.

My fave config has definitely been DIN. It seems to bring out more of both the high and low end, and creates an overall more natural sound. I've yet to run DINa, but am looking forward to it.

Bean, Thank you for that link.  So the Din Bars that I see would be the 17 or 20 CM @ 90 degrees!  The only thing I did not like about those bars were that the capsule is just hanging off the end of the bar and the fact that you are trying to squeez a $400 cable into the precut grooves.  Just was not a huge fan!

I really wouldn't be at all concerned about the various bars, they're not going to damage your cable and the mic caps are secure...

I won't call it a copy, but the Kwonbar looks to have a design that's no more or less likely to damage a KC* cable than Schoeps own STC bar.  As an owner and user of both, I can say they hold the mics quite securely and I'd have no fears when using them.  You *may* see some slight scraping of the Nextel Gray surface but that's pretty minor.

nedstrux, that's how the kc5 and other collette accessories were designed to be mounted.  It's a tried and true method that has worked for decades.  Give 'em a try, you may be surprised at how well it works

I run my 4's ortf from the sweet spot, x,y from the stage lip, and hope to bum some 41's for distance. If I had to use the 4's from range, i'd go x,y.

XY gets a bad wrap, but so you don't see too many folks running them that way except onstage, which I've done and really liked.  We ran 41's xy for a Crowes show at the Tabernacle in Atlanta and I was very happy with the recording...  still isn't all that great, but for the Tabernacle, it was really nice.  Don't be afraid to try them out.

Personally, I think the mk4's sound best run ORTF when in or near the sweet spot.  There's a reason why they make the stcg bar...

I stay away from XY with the schoeps, especially with the 41's.

With the mk4's I loved ORTF, and with the 41's I pretty much stick with DINA

On the topic of the tight fit with the bars and the collette cables, just get a file and file it down some on the inside to give you more room. The KWON bars I find not to be tight at all, but the Schoeps ORTF bar is very tight and I filed it down some to make more room instead of pushing a $400 cable too hard.
